James Watson and Francis Crick collected and interpreted key evidence to determine that DNA molecules take the shape of a twisted ladder—a double helix. The film presents the challenges, false starts, and eventual success of their bold chase. Watson relates what those early days in the Cavendish Laboratory were like, including his friendship with Crick and their shared ambition and passion. Rarely seen archival footage is combined with interviews with some of today’s leading scientists to bring this landmark discovery and all of its implications to life.

Engineers are joining forces with designers, scientists, and doctors at Drexel University to produce new biomedical textiles, and the resulting smart clothes are not only fashionably functional, but could also be life savers. With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), electrical and computer engineer Kapil Dandekar, industrial and fashion designer Genevieve Dion, and OB-GYN Owen Montgomery are incorporating RFID technology into their “belly bands” for women with high-risk pregnancies. The band continuously tracks data and alerts the doctor’s office via the Internet should the woman start contractions. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”
This video describes how indigenous communities from the tropical rainforest of Darién, Panama, use drones to map their lands. The communities use these maps to protect their territories from outside incursions and to design sustainable land-use plans. The Darién Gap is a remote tropical forest that has been home to indigenous people for thousands of years. As pressures from outside human development encroach on the forest, these communities are protecting their land using a cutting-edge tool: drones. Through a partnership with a nonprofit organization, the Rainforest Foundation, they map their community boundaries to secure land titles, create sustainable land-use plans, and monitor their forests against logging and ranching.

Imagine having the ability to manipulate light waves in order to see through a skull right into the brain, or being able to use lasers to diagnose a bacterial infection in a matter of minutes. At the Center for Biophotonic Sensors and Systems (CBSS) at Boston University, technologies enabling these abilities and many others are coming to light. With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), mechanical engineer Thomas Bifano and his colleagues are developing optical microscopes that can image deep into biological tissue, helping scientists observe molecular-scale activity. Reactions involving acids and bases can be described through the transfer of protons. The reactions of acids and bases, which can be monitored with indicators, can range from corrosive behavior to neutralizations that leave no acids or bases behind. Like people, all puppies have different personalities, and no two are exactly the same. For this reason, owners of new puppies or dogs will have to take time to get to know them, to build trust, and to discover what actually motivates them. Engineers are motivated to improve our quality of life, and they typically develop new products to achieve this goal. They use several steps in developing new products: design phase, testing phase, and production and maintenance phase. During the design phase, engineers specify the functional requirements of the product. They also produce a prototype to evaluate its overall effectiveness. They also consider cost, reliability, and safety. During the last two phases, engineers determine if any failures of the components are likely and where they occur. In these processes, engineers use computers to create designs, analyze functionality, and simulate how a machine, structure, or system operates.
Gabriela, Manuel and Leonardo are three friends who accidentally start a rocket that takes them to space. Their journey through space takes them to different planets and strange worlds. Throughout their journey, they have the help of Maqui, an on-board computer. Maqui helps them learn about the universe. The kids and Maqui see a strange space object, it looks like a spaceship. Maqui studies it and discovers that it’s a space station. The space station was created for all kinds of scientific research: physics and biology investigations, astronomic monitoring and studies on human beings in space. The kids land in the station and meet its commander, a computer called Inteligentis.
A bored parakeet begins his monologue talking about the upcoming carnival. All the animals on the show are organizing the carnival. Amanda, as usual, will not let him finish and comes out dancing in her carnival skirt. For her, the carnival is the ultimate event. The guest dog is opposed to having the carnival. The sloth enters and tells the truth. The dog likes the carnival, but he likes it so much and gets so excited that he has to go to the bathroom. Maite and Eve talk about different ways of expressing joy. The celebrity guest, soccer player Asprilla, explains he celebrated his goals with firecrackers. Everyone would get scared, and the game would be suspended. So he changed his way of celebrating and now does somersaults.
The first in a series of five documentaries plots the course of the river, from its source to its delta. In a succession of spectacular images we see the extraordinary geographical route that the Mekong takes, from the Tibetan plateau, down the mountains of the Yunnan Province in China, then through the tropical valleys and virgin forests of Burma, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand before reaching the green plains of Vietnam. In the tropical forest, nature abounds with wild animal species, rare plants and flowers. In Laos', whole villages still pray to the Gods of Trees while in Thailand a hunter shows how the hunting of Asian elephants for preservation, now forbidden, was practiced. Harvard University, electrical engineers Rob Wood and Gu-Yeon Wei, and computer scientist Radhika Nagpal created the “RoboBee,” a miniature flying robot, inspired by the biology of a bee and the insect’s hive behavior. With support from the National Science Foundation and a program called Expeditions in Computing, Wood put together a diverse team of collaborators to get the RoboBee project off the ground. Ultimately, the researchers hope to build a colony in which the RoboBees interact, using their hive as a refueling station. They say RoboBees have the potential to be useful in a number of ways, including search and rescue missions, traffic monitoring, and weather mapping.
