The first thing a baby giraffe experiences after being born is a two-meter fall straight down to the ground. But within an hour, it’s standing, walking, and nursing on its own. A blue whale calf, after nearly a year growing inside mom, can swim to the surface moments after being born. Human babies on the other hand are born unable to move or eat on their own. If humans are so smart, why are human babies so unsmart? Some may think it’s all about head size, but the real science is more complex. Part of the “It’s Okay to Be Smart” series.

An early exploration (2015) into how to make a sim accessible has taken place for Capacitor Lab Basics. The sim is keyboard navigable with some auditory descriptions when using 'Forms' mode with a screen reader. We are working on updating the content and the interactions, so that the simulation can be accessed by a screen reader in any mode. This prototype has been tested with NVDA and Firefox.

Monitoring water quality is vital to make sure dangerous bacteria doesn't creep into drinking water or overcome sewage treatment plants. With support from the National Science Foundation, engineers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute have developed the Environment Sample Processor (ESP), a "DNA lab in a can." The size of a trash can, it can be placed in the open ocean or at water treatment facilities to identify potentially harmful bacteria, algae, larvae, and other microscopic organisms in the surrounding waters. It can monitor and send results back to the lab in real time to monitor water quality. Now, the engineers are modifying the ESP so it can go mobile, working from an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV).

He thinks it is a huge river or a large lake. But when he tastes the water, it's salty. He wonders what sorcerer could have played such a dirty trick. He returns to his village and asks a wise old man to cast a spell to prevent the river used by the people from ever becoming salty. The old man assures him that it won't be necessary, that the river will never be salty. So Moko thinks that a well-meaning sorcerer must already be protecting the river--thankfully.

Moko thinks that he should not have thrown his net so soon and that the ocean is blindfolding them so they won't see which way it is taking them. Gliding along, they hear some strange sounds and see bizarre shapes in the mist. Alarick begins to play his flute and the fog begins to thin. They discover a lovely bay, sheltered from the wind, ideal for fishing. Moko is filled with admiration for his friend who knew how to tame the ocean.
