  • Split image of mechanical clasps and pinchers stitching an incision and human hands manipulating mechanical controls. Caption: a surgeon can perform complex and delicate procedures

Almost fifty years ago the first industrial robot was "employed" in an automobile assembly plant. Robots are regularly used for hazardous, super-heavy and difficult tasks in manufacturing, agriculture, entertainment, medicine, and space exploration. Welding robots with touch sensing and seam tracking abilities increase assembly plant efficiency, while robotic surgery results in less pain, quicker recovery and shorter hospital stays. NASAs robotic rovers Spirit and Opportunity are mapping the terrain and searching for evidence of water on Mars. Honda Motor Company's humanoid robot, ASIMO, can walk, run, recognize people and identify sounds and voices.

  • Close up of the upper half of a shrimp surrounded by plant life and nestled in some rocks. Caption: but each individual had its own unique voice.

Scientists have recently discovered that the California mantis shrimp can talk. Well, it’s not the same as human speech, but it is audible communication. Researchers studying sounds on the ocean floor had long suspected that burrow-dwelling creatures made noise, and they decided to spy on a group of shrimp by dropping recording devices into their habitat. What they heard was fascinating. The California mantis shrimp not only made noise, but each individual seemed to have its own unique voice. Part of the "News of the Day" series.

  • Illustration of a stream of water being heated by underground magma. Caption: In its heated state, the water wants to escape the spring

Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, night falls and Moko, having followed the footprints in the snow, reaches the seemingly uninhabited village. He notices a young boy by a shrub who is cutting firewood. He introduces himself as Alarick and invites Moko into his home. Along the way, they hear a great rumbling sound that startles them, like the breath of a monster. Moko wants to go to the source of the noise, thinking it is the reason for the villagers' hiding. Alarick then leads him to the back of the village where he shows him a geyser and a pool of hot water. Moko thinks that Alarick must know a great deal of secrets about this new land and decides to stay a while, the end of the world can wait for now.

  • Illustration of a stream of water falling down the side of a mountain. Caption: Waterfalls are often stronger during spring,

Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, continuing their expedition, Moko and Totemie come across a great river. It is so beautiful and so wide that they decide to build a raft and explore it further. A woman who is returning from the fields warns them of a great danger, but it is too late, the current has already carried the raft along its waves. In the distance they can hear a deep rumbling sound, and it seems to be getting closer. As their raft is propelled forward, it is stopped by the edge of a reef just on the edge of a great chasm. The spectacle is so breathtaking that they forget their fear. When they finally manage to reach the shore safely, they thank the river for having kept them safe and having shown them the magnificent view of the waterfall.

  • Illustration of a mountain in heavy rain with darker earth running down one side of it. Caption: (narrator) Mudslides are very fluid, and flow very, very quickly.

Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, Moko and Totemie stay by the side of the lake for some time. One morning, a terrible sound shakes the village and as they wonder where it is coming from they see a wave of mud streaming down the mountain and threatening to swallow up the village. Moko approaches the wave of mud and pleads with it to keep the village safe. He remembers that Mei Lei knew how to speak to mountains and takes out the stone she gave him and is about to offer it to the mud as Mei Lei had offered hers to the volcano but Totemie stops him and offers her necklace instead. The village is saved and the mudslide flows into the lake. Moko promises himself to one day give Totemie what is dearest to him.

  • Cartoon of a girl repeated in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Caption: Go back through the prism? Sounds like a plan to me.

The Magic School Bus is an award winning animated children’s television series based on the book series of the same title by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen. It is notable for its use of celebrity talent and being both highly entertaining and educational. There's something dazzling in Ms. Frizzle's closet: a magical, light-powered pinball machine. To win at this game, the kids have to light up all six colors of the rainbow. Now the race is on, as the class shrinks down and zooms into the pinball machine. They will have to learn how to reflect all of the light to combine it into one beam to make their escape.

  • Person holding a small partially transparent cube with wires and other equipment attached. Caption: and are developing microbial fuel cells

Water is used by everyone, and in the process, a lot of it goes to waste. Whether it goes down drains, sewers, or toilets, much of it ends up at a wastewater treatment plant where it undergoes rigorous cleaning before it flows back to the environment. The process takes time, money and a lot of energy. What if that wastewater could be turned into energy? It almost sounds too good to be true, but environmental engineer Bruce Logan is working on ways to make it happen. With support from the National Science Foundation, Logan and his team at Penn State University are taking the idea a step further. They are developing microbial fuel cells to channel the bacteria's hard work into energy.

  • Two moles strapped together pulling in opposite directions while a bird in a cage is balancing on their backs. Mass-mass Mole-mass. Caption: to figure out mass, find out how reactants work together,

Using a balanced chemical equation to calculate amounts of reactants and products is called stoichiometry. It is a super technical-sounding word that simply means using ratios from the balanced equation. Topics covered in this program include the metric system, balancing equations, molar conversions, mass percent, empirical formulas, and limiting reactants. Part of the "Chemistry" series.

  • Illustration of a river and tree partially obscured by grayish-white thin clouds. Caption: When we can see through the cloud, we call it a mist.

Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, as they drift away from the iceberg and are throwing their fishing nets, Moko and Alarick's boat is surrounded by a thick fog. Moko thinks this is smoke and that there must be fire. He cannot even see his friend, just hears his voice telling him that a sudden fog on the ocean can last for a long time and that only patience will save them. Moko thinks that he should not have thrown his net so soon and that the ocean is blindfolding them so they won't see which way it is taking them. Gliding along, they hear some strange sounds and see bizarre shapes in the mist. Alarick begins to play his flute and the fog begins to thin. They discover a lovely bay, sheltered from the wind, ideal for fishing. Moko is filled with admiration for his friend who knew how to tame the ocean.
