    Communication between people and cultures initially stemmed from trade and commerce. With Guttenberg's invention of the printing press, information was available to people beyond the elite and wealthy for the first time. Trade drew explorers out into the oceans, and mapmakers outlined their treacherous journeys. These basic maps are what led Columbus to believe he could reach the East by sailing west. Instead he found America, and established trade routes between America and Europe.

    Sight, touch, hearing, taste, and smell send sensory messages to the brain at a speed of 430km/hr. The brain deals with 11 million information signals per second, and this continual flow of information is sorted and analyzed by the brain, which directs the senses, organizes them, and improves them. The brain’s plasticity allows it to continually adapt. If and individual loses one sense, the brain reorganizes and compensates by increasing the power of the other senses. This episode highlights an artist who is blind and uses his fingers to feel the color of the paint before applying it to the canvas. Part of the “Human + The Future of Our Senses” series.

    While the human brain and nervous system are wired with hundreds of billions of nerve cells, or neurons, sea slugs can get by with tens of thousands. Ironically, sea slugs reveal a lot about the chemistry of the human brain and nervous system. In fact, they are ideal as study subjects for research on learning, memory, and how neurons control behavior. With support from the National Science Foundation, analytical chemist Jonathan Sweedler and his team at the University of Illinois are working to develop new measurement tools that enable insights into the function of individual cells in the central nervous systems of slugs and other animals in order to uncover novel neurochemical pathways.     With support from the National Science Foundation, mechanical and computer engineer Nilanjan Sarkar and psychologist Zachary Warren at Vanderbilt University have developed a learning environment for kids with autism, built around state-of-the-art technologies. One of those state-of-the-art technologies is a humanoid robot, nicknamed Russell, who works with the children on their ability to imitate others. The robot has some of the characteristics of a human, but it’s not as complex, so it doesn’t overstimulate or overwhelm a child with autism.

One of CEINT's main goals is to develop tools that can help assess possible risks to human health and the environment. A key aspect of this research happens in mesocosms, which are outdoor experiments that simulate the natural environment. His story stands as the first and one of the best understood examples of natural selection, where the selective agent, adaptive mutation, and molecule involved are known--and this is in humans to boot. The protection against malaria by the sickle-cell mutation shows how evolution does not necessarily result in the best solution imaginable but proceeds by whatever means are available.

It was developed by University of Miami professor Kenny Broad and a number of collaborators, and supported with funding from the National Science Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It includes TV meteorologist broadcasts, newspaper stories, web stories, bulletins from NOAA and even interactions with neighbors.     Students receive a crash course in the physiology and functioning of their hearts as well as how to keep their hearts healthy.     The heart is the most symbolic organ of the human body. Across history, it has been seen as the source of emotions and the center of human existence.
