  • Person working on powerlines. Spanish captions.

Global warming is changing the intensity, duration, and frequency of precipitation. These changing climate patterns are altering the water cycle and negatively impacting the environment. As the climate of regions changes, life on earth is significantly impacted. The increased potential for flooding raises concerns over loss of life and property, and individual actions are critical to lessen global warming and climate change. Chapter 4 of Air: Climate Change Series.

  • Sky filled with gray fluffy clouds. Caption: Clouds can block some of the sun's rays

The temperature of the Earth is dropping, and superhero Autumn Ray must find a safe way to heat the planet. At first she thought the answer was to increase the amount of greenhouse gases, but Dr. Mother Nature tells her there has to be a safe balance of gases to regulate the temperature of the Earth. Part of "The Science of Climate" series.

  • Palm trees bent horizontally from the force of wind. Caption: - There's evidence that the storms have increased.

Scientific evidence may show that human activity, particularly over the past 100 years, has led to a buildup of what are known as "greenhouse gases," the most common of which is carbon dioxide, in the atmosphere. Energy use, particularly the burning of fossil fuels and the large-scale removal of vegetation from the earth's surface, are thought to be largely responsible for greenhouse gas buildup.

  • A crowded street covered in fog. Caption: Sometimes it seems so dark on the streets at midday.

Pollution is waste material produced from human activities. It impacts the environment in a negative way. Explores how pollution can affect the air, water, and land in the form of gases, liquids, and solids. Substances that constitute pollution in the environment include: greenhouse gases (CO2, smog, and industrial emissions), oil, blue/green algae, plastic, litter, dog poop, and fertilizer. Also explores how a sustainable future depends upon individuals and society minimizing pollution by making informed and responsible decisions when choosing consumer items.

  • A manmade dam. Spanish captions.

Human actions can have positive and negative impacts on Earth. Students will learn ways to make sure they help preserve the Earth.

  • A polar bear is in its natural habitat. Caption: It's just an incredible experience.

High school student Kylee Sipowski has a plan to help polar bears. Global warming is impacting their habitats, and she networks with students, her local community, and international organizations to spread her message of conservation.

  • Very crowded market filled with people. Caption: They get this energy through respiration --

Explains the scientific concepts of photosynthesis, respiration, and enzymes. Laboratory experiments demonstrate: the rate of photosynthesis in greenhouse plants; the amount of oxygen used by the body during respiration at varying speeds; and the reaction times of different enzymes.

  • Rolling mountainous landscape with tree in foreground. Spanish captions.

Students explore the important role the environment plays in everyday life. Several environmental problems are highlighted, with a focus on pollution and global warming. Additional concepts and terminology discussed include ecology, biological extinction, resource depletion, overconsumption of resources, fossil fuels, global climate change, and natural resources.

  • An oil drilling in the middle of a field. Caption: our nonrenewable resources are dwindling,

People affect the environment in positive and negative ways. Discusses earth's renewable and nonrenewable natural resources. Highlights environmental areas of concern such as endangered species, resource conservation, pollution of air and water, the importance of recycling, and the danger of global warming. Emphasis is on human responsibility. Summary and quiz.

  • Cartoon cow on a yoga mat stretching to touch its toes. Spanish captions.

Willy is participating in a rally against global warming, but he has an upset stomach. The cat invites him to practice the purifying session to help with digestion. They practice the butterfly, the book, the phone, and the armadillo poses. Part of the "Ooommm Mmmooo Yoga For Children" series.

  • Person holding a cylindrical piece of ice. Caption: This one is based on the ratio of heavy to light hydrogen.

With support from the National Science Foundation, geoscientists such as lab director Jim White are studying ancient ice, in the form of ice cores. The information extracted from this ice could play a critical role in understanding and preparing for any imminent changes to our planet from global warming.

  • An explosive volcano filling the air with ash. Caption: several miles into the upper atmosphere,

This program from the acclaimed PBS Nature series, "Forces of the Wild," shows how man risks everything by building on earthquake fault lines, farming the slopes of volcanoes, polluting the air and warming the Earth. Like children playing with matches, we have no idea of the consequences of what we are doing. Narrated by James Earl Jones.

  • Planet Earth as seen from space. Spanish captions.

Argentinean agriculture has one of the world’s highest productivity rates and is known for its soybean, corn and sunflower crops. However, the industry is also a significant contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. These climatic changes could in turn affect the productivity of the agricultural sector as well as impact economic aspects of the farmers’ lives. Chapter 3 of Air: Climate Change Series.

  • Rows of plants being grown in a greenhouse. Spanish captions.

Advances in technology applied to agricultural production processes increase with the passage of time. This occurs because society demands better products. For this reason the Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia through the School of Agricultural Sciences, Livestock and Environment organized the first International Congress of Agricultural Biotechnology, in which researchers from around the continent and Europe gathered to share technological advances and research in Biotechnology.

  • Flowers

    • Video
Closeup of a sunflower. Caption: A large sunflower head might produce 1,000 seeds.

One of the fifteen parts of the "Farm to Market" series. Just like fruit and vegetables, flowers are raised commercially on farms. Shows how flowers, such as roses, orchids, anthuriums, and carnations, are raised outdoors and in greenhouses. Also visits a wholesale flower market to see where merchants go to buy flowers for their stores.

  • A cartoon shows a large python wrapping its body and squeezing a small crocodile.

About 59 million years ago, the largest animal lurking in the ancient forests of Colombia by far was a Titanoboa. It’s only been in the past few years that scientists have put together the many pieces of this puzzling creature, but it turns out that the greatest snake that the world ever saw was made possible by a warming planet. Part of the "Eons" series.

  • Black Carbon

    • Video
People in full-body orange and black clothing with gear standing on ice in pockets of water. Caption: to trace where the black carbon is coming from.

Black carbon is the fancy name for soot, and it is causing changes in the Arctic climate. It comes from the burning of fossil fuels. Studies suggest that black carbon is contributing to the acceleration of sea ice melting in the Arctic, and the loss of this ice would lead to more rapid warming and possibly irreversible climate change.

  • Two people talking while standing in a greenhouse surrounded by potted and planted plants. Caption: Soak the soil and let it drain away?

Host Peter Tonge visits with Robert Almquist of Almquist Flowerland who offers tips on raising and caring for houseplants. Covers the following topics: watering during winter months; combating pests; buying houseplants; repotting and pruning; determining types of soil; and using a granular soil additive to help the soil retain moisture. Originally aired as an episode of "The Good Green Earth."

  • A mountain covered in snow. Caption: (male narrator) They exist on every continent on earth except Australia.

Glaciers are one of the main driving forces affecting Earth's climate and landscape. These massive sheets of ice are constantly moving and changing, and warming temperatures are causing most glaciers to recede. Located in some of the most inhospitable areas of the planet, scientists are venturing to glaciers to study them and looking for clues from past and present changes in climate. Part of the "Glacier Series."
