    A team of researchers from the University of Utah is perfectly situated to study rock arches. With support from the National Science Foundation, geologist Jeff Moore and his team are pioneering a new method of structural health monitoring to keep tabs on the structural integrity of geological landmarks. The researchers have discovered that each arch has its own "voice." The arches naturally vibrate, like a guitar string, with its own distinct resonant frequency. The team's research has important implications for the conservation and management of these natural structures. Part of the "Science Nation" series.

    Global warming is accelerating the melting of the world’s glaciers. The rate of glacial retreat has increased over the last hundred years due to global warming and the increase of greenhouse gas emissions. The increase in glaciers melting has significant impact on the water supply for many global communities. Glacial retreat also impacts world climate zones since glaciers help regulate the climate of the planet. However, scientists argue that it is not too late to reverse the effects of global warming in an effort to decrease the rate at which glaciers are melting. Chapter 11 of Air: Climate Change Series.

    In Colorado, drilling for oil and natural gas using hydraulic fracturing, sometimes referred to as fracking, is big business. But questions about its impact on the air and water are far from settled. With support from the National Science Foundation, University of Colorado environmental engineer Joseph Ryan heads a team gathering data on the pros and cons of oil and natural gas development, including the use of hydraulic fracturing.     Fruit bats carry the Nipah virus, which can be transmitted to humans and cause severe disease. In Bangladesh, the virus causes a disease outbreak almost every year. Dr. Jon Epstein of the EcoHealth Alliance explains the evidence that revealed bats are the natural reservoir of the virus. Their research also shows the route of transmission to humans. Dr. Epstein and collaborators in Bangladesh are now monitoring bat populations throughout the country for the presence of the virus to identify human populations that might be at risk of transmission.

    With today's high fuel costs, it is time to start looking beyond petroleum and into renewable resources to power vehicles. Ethanol is a clean-burning fuel derived from plants, primarily corn. It is combined with gasoline to produce a cleaner fuel that doesn't emit as many greenhouse gases as pure gasoline. Pure ethanol has not yet been approved to fuel vehicles, but it is the fuel of choice for racecars. By mixing gasoline with ethanol, fuel supply can be extended. Explores the production of ethanol and highlights the importance it holds in the "green power" movement.

    In a year when many Floridians have experienced first-hand the dangers of raging wildfires, University of Central Florida researchers are preparing to study whether interactive, virtual reality simulations of wildfires can make residents more willing to invest in preventing them. With funding from the National Science Foundation, the UCF research team is developing an interactive simulation of a wildfire spreading through Volusia County. Participants will decide how much they want to invest in prescribed burns and insurance, and their decisions will be contrasted with those who only receive written information about the danger of wildfires.

    Climb aboard the Cyclops, a microscopic research vessel, and investigate an amazing hidden world on which all living things depend. The Cyclops houses a team of scientists known as the Micronauts and guides them through their discoveries of biological classification, diversity, and ecology. In this episode, the Cyclops is washed out of the pond and tumbles into a rapidly flowing stream. In the rapids, they discover aquatic insects living under rocks. Through their careful observations, the Micronauts learn the insects are adapted for living on water-swept rocks. Part 7 of the Microscopic Monsters Series.

    At the National Science Foundation-funded Center for Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology (CEINT), headquartered at Duke University, scientists and engineers are researching how nanoscale materials affect living things. One of CEINT's main goals is to develop tools that can help assess possible risks to human health and the environment. A key aspect of this research happens in mesocosms, which are outdoor experiments that simulate the natural environment. These simulated wetlands in Duke Forest serve as a test bed for exploring how nanomaterials move through an ecosystem and impact living things. Part of the “Science Nation” series.

It was developed by University of Miami professor Kenny Broad and a number of collaborators, and supported with funding from the National Science Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It includes TV meteorologist broadcasts, newspaper stories, web stories, bulletins from NOAA and even interactions with neighbors.     Charles Darwin once boldly predicted that buried deep in the earth are transitional fossils of creatures with intermediate features between ancestral animal groups and the modern animal groups. Since Darwin’s time, many transitional fossils have been discovered, and they provide crucial insights into the origin of key structures and the creatures that possess them. And University of Chicago paleontologist and award-winning author Neil Shubin provides a first-hand account of the painstaking search for the transitional fossil of Tiktaalik, a creature with a mix of features common to fish and four-legged animals.

Explores Snell's Law by highlighting the importance of a refractive index along with displacement, deviation, dispersion, and the role of refraction in fiber optics.     The Pajaro Valley, in the Monterey Bay area of California, is ideally suited for agriculture. In fact, the Pajaro Valley and the nearby Salinas Valley produce nearly half of the strawberries grown in the United States yearly. But, the water source for the valley is a confined underground aquifer that is slowly being depleted. In January of 2011, the American Institute of Mathematics held a Sustainability Problems workshop with the goal of bringing together mathematicians and industry representatives to work on a variety of sustainability problems, including renewable energy, air quality, water management, and other environmental issues.     At Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Christopher Williams heads the effort to further advance 3-D printing with copper, a widely used conductor in electronics. Williams is using a process called binder jetting in which an inkjet printer selectively jets glue into a bed of copper powder, layer-by-layer. The printed copper product is then taken to a furnace to fuse the particles together. With support from the National Science Foundation, Williams is addressing a major challenge in the 3-D copper printing process, which is to eliminate the porosity that develops in the part during the process.     What does a mirror tell us about light? Illustrates 11 computer-animated video units for one aspect of light's behavior-reflection. Euclid's geometric optics and his findings on the perception of distance and perspective lead to a discussion of the Law of Reflection, linking angle of incidence with angle of reflection, and the concepts of absorption, transmission, and diffuse reflection. Explains the principles involved with plane, concave, and convex mirrors, including vertex, principle axis, center of curvature, radius of curvature, and virtual image. Shows a group of "mirror equations" how an object's location can be determined by using the laws of reflection.

    Chemist Paul Edmiston’s search for a new way to detect explosives at airports led to the creation Osorb. A swellable, organically-modified silica, or glass, capable of absorbing oil and other contaminants from water. Osorb has become the principal product of a company called ABSMaterials, where Edmiston is now chief scientist. With support from the National Science Foundation, Edmiston and his colleagues at ABSMaterials are developing water remediation technologies for cities and industries. ABSMaterials is creating formulas to address various contaminants, including hydrocarbons, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, herbicides, chlorinated solvents, and endocrine disruptors.     Engineers are motivated to improve our quality of life, and they typically develop new products to achieve this goal. They use several steps in developing new products: design phase, testing phase, and production and maintenance phase. During the design phase, engineers specify the functional requirements of the product. They also produce a prototype to evaluate its overall effectiveness. They also consider cost, reliability, and safety. During the last two phases, engineers determine if any failures of the components are likely and where they occur. In these processes, engineers use computers to create designs, analyze functionality, and simulate how a machine, structure, or system operates.
