    Harnessing energy from the waves of the world’s oceans seems like the ultimate in renewable fuel. With funding from the National Science Foundation, Electrical engineer Annette von Jouanne is leading efforts to capture wave energy, by creating simple, powerful devices that can withstand heavy winds, monster waves, and corrosive salt water. Oregon State University research now underway is based on ocean buoy generators. As ocean swells hit the buoy, electrical coils inside move through a magnetic field, inducing a voltage, and creating electricity.

    When a tsunami hits, it may come ashore like a fast rising flood and strike with devastating force. The series of waves may continue for hours. Sometimes the first one may not be the last or the largest. Potential warning signs of an incoming tsunami include a strong earthquake that causes difficulty standing, a rapid rise or fall of the water along the coast, and a loud ocean roar.     A rip current is a narrow, fast-moving channel of water that starts near the beach and extends offshore through the line of breaking waves. If a swimmer gets caught in a rip current, the best thing they can do is stay calm. The current will not pull a swimmer underwater, but it will pull them away from shore. A swimmer caught in a rip current should float and wave for help. Do not try to swim back to shore or against the rip current. Part of the "Danger Zone" series.

    Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, continuing their expedition, Moko and Totemie come across a great river. It is so beautiful and so wide that they decide to build a raft and explore it further. A woman who is returning from the fields warns them of a great danger, but it is too late, the current has already carried the raft along its waves. In the distance they can hear a deep rumbling sound, and it seems to be getting closer. As their raft is propelled forward, it is stopped by the edge of a reef just on the edge of a great chasm. The spectacle is so breathtaking that they forget their fear. When they finally manage to reach the shore safely, they thank the river for having kept them safe and having shown them the magnificent view of the waterfall.

    Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, having managed to get away from the iceberg, Moko and Alarick are moored in the peaceful bay and they decide to fish. They disembark and go off to find branches to make fishing lines. But when they return, the water level has gone down and their boat is beached and the sea is far in the distance. Confused, they go in search of a river, but everything is frozen! Tired and hungry, they return to their boat, which is again floating atop the waves. The sea has returned! Cautious of the rising and falling tide, they take their boat further out to sea and finally throw their lines and catch some fish, convinced that the sea simply wanted to take them to this spot where the fishing would be better.

    Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, Moko and Mei-Lei are gathering seashells in between the rocks on the white sand beach to decorate the village's houses. Moko asks Mei-Lei if they can go to other beaches to try to find other shells. Mei-Lei likes the idea and goes to ask a fisherman to take them to another beach on his boat. Just beyond the village Moko sees a vast plain that has been flooded with water. He thinks this must have been the great wave, flooding the field with water so that the rice would grow. This is when Mei-Lei picks up a magnificent seashell and Moko believes that it must surely be a gift from the ocean. Moko and Mei-Lei make their way back home, carrying their gift and happy to have seen wonderful new places. They are certain that the ocean must know an underground passage in which it sends waves every now and then to feed the rivers and the fields.

In this episode, one morning, Alarick and Moko head into the sea to go fishing. They take a small boat and anchor in the shadow of a great boulder of ice to protect them from the wind. When they wake up they don't recognize their surroundings. The iceberg is drifting along the waves and is dragging their boat along with it. Moko is confident the ocean is showing them where there will be more fish for them to bring back to the village.

In this episode, on that morning, Moko decides it is time to leave this place and continue on his quest for the end of the world. Alarick offers him his boat and Moko takes off. Nightfalls and daylight seems to never return. As he advances on the waves of the dark ocean, his boat gets stuck in the sea ice. Moko thinks that this country is refusing to let him leave. He pleads for daylight to return and for the ice to melt by playing the flute Alarick gave him. The ice melts, his boat is freed and he carries on his voyage as the sun rises ahead of him. Moko discovers a new land in the horizon.

Looking out to the horizon, he notices a shot of color at the water's surface. He wakes Mei-Lei to ask her what he is seeing. Together they take a barge and set off. Under them, a rainbow of colors is dancing in the waves. Moko and Mei-Lei think that the fish must be organizing a party and decide to dive in. Bit by bit the sun is rising and day is breaking. The two friends return to the village, overjoyed at the wonders of the ocean.
