    Claire Tomlin is pushing the envelope of aerospace design by building a new class of autonomous helicopters, with support from the National Science Foundation. These aircraft don’t need a pilot steering them remotely because they navigate themselves. Tomlin believes these helicopters will have applications in the military, civilian search and rescue, and many more venues.

    The Center for Advanced Forestry Systems is using forestry science and collaborations among universities, industry, and the government to make commercially grown forests more productive and sustainable.     In less than a second a sandfish lizard can dig its way into the sand and disappear. The sandfish's slithering moves are inspiring new robotic moves that could one day help search and rescue crews find survivors in piles of rubble left from disasters. With support from the National Science Foundation, physicist Daniel Goldman and his team at Georgia Tech are studying the lizard’s movements, using x-rays to track it underground. Their findings will contribute to engineering designs for deployable robots that could one day help canine search and rescue teams find survivors more quickly.

    For as long as parents and babies have been smiling, laughing, and cooing at each other, scientists still have a lot of questions about just how these interactions help infants develop. With support from the National Science Foundation, University of Miami psychology professor Daniel Messinger and his colleagues want to learn more about child development by studying how moms, dads, and babies respond to each other.     With support from the National Science Foundation’s Human-Centered Computing Program (HCC), Stanford University mechanical engineer Mark Cutkosky and his team are using volunteer test subjects to find out if the way walk is wearing out their knees. One of the major problems at the root of knee pain is uneven wear and tear on the knee cartilage, which leads to arthritis. Cutkosky’s research, known as Movement Retraining, focuses on alleviating pain by analyzing and possibly changing a person's stride. The goal is to slow the rate at which arthritis progresses and thereby delay or even eliminate the need for surgery. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”

    Sea turtles, salmon, and sharks sometimes travel the width of the ocean to return to their "breeding ground" to reproduce. With funding from the National Science Foundation, Biologist Ken Lohmann at the University of North Carolina -Chapel Hill studies the role magnetic fields play in these long distance migrations. In his lab he's done behavioral studies, manipulating environmental cues to see how young turtles respond to even small changes in magnetic fields.

    It started as a project for long term space survival, when NASA estimated that crews headed to or living on Mars would spend 80% of their waking hours farming. But, with support from the National Science Foundation, research into a leaf sensor that could “call in” with its vital statistics morphed into technology that can help farmers on this planet. The goal is to save water by directly measuring a plant’s moisture level.

    Invasive animals are often most abundant in habitats impacted by humans. Understanding why this is true may reveal important insights about the ecological impact of many invasive species. The invasive fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, is a notoriously pesky species that benefits when humans disturb natural areas. With support from the National Science Foundation, Dr. Joshua King at the University of Central Florida and Dr. Walter Tschinkel at Florida State University have been exploring the underlying causes and consequences of the association of fire ants with human-altered ecosystems.     Researchers at New York University are tackling one of the major challenges in agriculture. They are trying to raise healthy plants while minimizing the use of fertilizer and the leaching of fertilizer chemicals into the environment. A team led by scientist Gloria Coruzzi and computer scientist Dennis Shasha is using the latest tools to develop new plant varieties that don't need as much nitrogen to grow. The researchers are also investigating which of the plant's genes control fertilizer uptake. Part of the "Science Nation" series.

    Like everyone else, George Huber knows money doesn't grow on trees. But, ask him where gasoline comes from and he won't just tell you, he'll show you. To fully understand, Science Nation recently went with Huber to a local lumber yard in Amherst, Mass. A lumber yard is the perfect place to find cellulose, the key building block in plant cells and the organic material that gives plants their structure. So what does cellulose have to do with gasoline? A lot.

    When Geologist Jeff Donnelly of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) hunts for hurricanes, he does it safely at ground level, or just slightly below. He is even able to do it without having to encounter so much as a drop of rain or a gust of wind. With funding from the National Science Foundation, Donnelly leads a team that studies long term global hurricane patterns. They’ve unearthed some interesting findings about past hurricane activity which might provide a hint about what to expect in the future.

    Chemist Paul Edmiston’s search for a new way to detect explosives at airports led to the creation Osorb. A swellable, organically-modified silica, or glass, capable of absorbing oil and other contaminants from water. Osorb has become the principal product of a company called ABSMaterials, where Edmiston is now chief scientist. With support from the National Science Foundation, Edmiston and his colleagues at ABSMaterials are developing water remediation technologies for cities and industries. ABSMaterials is creating formulas to address various contaminants, including hydrocarbons, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, herbicides, chlorinated solvents, and endocrine disruptors.     Sarah Brosnan, a psychologist and neuroscientist at Georgia State, has released a study helping to prove that primates share similar feelings of inequity as humans, and she will extend the research with a five year National Science Foundation grant. In the next round of research Brosnan will work with Bart Wilson at Chapman University to do similar hands-on and computer game-like experiments on both humans and primates. The idea is to better understand how economic decision making strategies evolved and which if any are uniquely human.

    From cleaning supplies to pharmaceuticals, surfactants are the compounds that make soap bubbly, paint spread smoothly, and medication dissolve more easily. Most surfactants are currently made from non-renewable petroleum sources and many of these surfactants don’t break down easily after they are discarded. Some can persist in the environment for decades. Their widespread use and environmental persistence has raised concerns about toxicity. At the University of Arizona, Jeanne Pemberton and her cross-disciplinary team work to create new “green” surfactants based on sugars that are generally known as glycolipids. With support from the National Science Foundation, Pemberton and her team are exploring the recent discovery of a versatile synthesis that allows production of many different types of glycolipids in large quantities. Some of these glycolipids are modeled after naturally occurring biosurfactants and some can be produced relatively inexpensively using renewable natural resources.     Disease, pollution, and loss of habitat are killing off hundreds of species of amphibians. One of the biggest threats right now is an aquatic fungus called chytrid that infects the skin of these historically tough, resilient creatures. With funding from the National Science Foundation, Biologist Vance Vredenburg studies the disease and shares his research with scientists who are dealing with this crisis on every continent where amphibians live.

    The Pajaro Valley, in the Monterey Bay area of California, is ideally suited for agriculture. In fact, the Pajaro Valley and the nearby Salinas Valley produce nearly half of the strawberries grown in the United States yearly. But, the water source for the valley is a confined underground aquifer that is slowly being depleted. In January of 2011, the American Institute of Mathematics held a Sustainability Problems workshop with the goal of bringing together mathematicians and industry representatives to work on a variety of sustainability problems, including renewable energy, air quality, water management, and other environmental issues.     With support from the National Science Foundation, Astrobiologist Richard Hoover really goes to extremes to find living things that thrive where life would seem to be impossible--from the glaciers of the Alaskan Arctic to the ice sheets of Antarctica. He thinks it is even possible that over the course of billions of years, life has spread around the solar system--a sort of cosmic cross pollination. Microbes could live in the ice deep within comets, frozen there for eons until a collision with another planet or moon delivered them to a new home.

    Who are the biggest super stars in the universe? For Adam Burrows, an astrophysics professor at Princeton University, it's not who, but "what," and they are far from Hollywood, or even Earth, for that matter. Burrows reveals that the biggest super stars are the stars that die in a massive explosion called a "supernova." With support from the National Science Foundation, Burrows investigates supernovae, and he has recently created 3D computer simulations showing the actual moment of a star's death. His simulations are revealing more about these stellar performances.
