    The researchers are building scaffolds that mimic the three dimensional structure of human tissue. They use a machine called a biofabricator to deposit cancer cells at strategic locations inside the 3D structures, just like tumors in human flesh. These structures are high fidelity test systems. Burg and her team can culture cancer cells in them, experimenting to see which treatments are the most effective, with the ultimate goal of personalizing a treatment or a vaccine for individual patients.     Understanding what happens at the epicenter of an earthquake, as the tectonic plates beneath the earth shift and the earth shakes, could help better predict when and where the next big one will hit. For the past six years scientists from a number of institutions have joined in a project called San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth, or SAFOD. They have drilled to the core of the San Andreas Fault, near Parkfield California, down to a specific area along the fault known to experience a number of small earthquakes every year. By retrieving and studying core rock samples from that site, geologists Chris Marone and Brett Carpenter and hydrogeologist Demian Saffer are getting a better understanding of the types of rocks involved in major quakes, versus the rocks present at more forgiving ones.

    Hurricane Sandy was the deadliest of the 2012 hurricane season and was the second costliest hurricane in U.S. history. University of Washington civil engineer Dorothy Reed and her team received a grant from the National Science Foundation to study how Hurricane Sandy affected the infrastructure of the New York Metropolitan area, including the power and transit systems. Reed and her team area creating highly detailed maps to construct a comprehensive street-by-street view of Sandy’s devastation.

    Researchers at New York University are tackling one of the major challenges in agriculture. They are trying to raise healthy plants while minimizing the use of fertilizer and the leaching of fertilizer chemicals into the environment. A team led by scientist Gloria Coruzzi and computer scientist Dennis Shasha is using the latest tools to develop new plant varieties that don't need as much nitrogen to grow.     Researchers from NOAA's National Marine Mammal Lab track the migrating fur seals to understand where they feed in winter months and what marine resources they depend on for survival. It's early November and the team affixes a satellite transmitter to an adult female. They won't see her back on the Pribilof Islands until next July, and they hope the tag will stay on throughout winter and spring. Back at their offices in Seattle, the researchers begin tracking tagged animals via satellites.

With support from the National Science Foundation, geologist Jeff Moore and his team are pioneering a new method of structural health monitoring to keep tabs on the structural integrity of geological landmarks. The researchers have discovered that each arch has its own "voice." The arches naturally vibrate, like a guitar string, with its own distinct resonant frequency.
