    It’s called a wavemaker, and its 300 feet long and 12 feet wide. With support from the National Science Foundation, this huge new tool, the largest of its type in the United States, is helping scientists perform large scale studies on the impact of both hurricane and tsunami waves.

    Welcome to the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Phytotron, a singular facility for growing plants under various combinations of strictly controlled environmental conditions. Scientists are able to conduct all types of plant research here, from studies of disease-resistant crops to drought-proof grasses to new biofuels. The NCSU Phytotron was built in the 1960s with support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), and was used a decade later to help prevent a collapse in the U.S. corn crop from fungal disease. Now, after more than a generation of such research breakthroughs, the Phytotron has received additional support from NSF for a 21st century makeover. The renovations include a new Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) lab with a greenhouse that houses high security research, such as experiments with viral and bacterial pathogens.     Researchers around the world can compare notes on one of the most powerful tools available for imaging human brain function, the fMRI, thanks to support from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The project, called OpenfMRI, allows scientists to share their data easily and securely in a standardized format. The advantages are clear to Stanford neuroscientist Vinod Menon, who researches brain development and is using OpenfMRI to validate his research. Menon says as more studies are added to OpenfMRI, it becomes a powerful tool for diagnosing and treating neurological disorders. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”

    The National Science Foundation in cooperation with the Marinette Marine Corporation (MMC) and the University of Alaska, Fairbanks has successfully launched the R/V Sikuliaq, a next-generation global class research vessel. MMC is the Wisconsin shipyard that built the ship, with funding provided by NSF through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. UAF's School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences will operate the ship as part of the U.S. academic research fleet. The new vessel's name, Sikuliaq, pronounced “see-KOO-lee-ack,” is an Inupiat word meaning young sea ice. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”

    An electric eel can generate enough current to stun its prey. Johns Hopkins University neuroethologist Eric Fortune traveled to Ecuador to study electric knifefish in their native habitat. Back at Johns Hopkins University, research collaborator mechanical engineer Noah Cowan and the rest of the team use Fortune's field data to help with their observations and experiments in the lab. With support from the National Science Foundation, they are studying the knifefish to learn more about how the brains of animals work to control their behavior.

    With support from the National Science Foundation, computer scientists at the University of Illinois at Chicago are pushing science fiction closer to reality. They have created a wraparound virtual world in which a researcher wearing 3D glasses can take a walk through a human brain, fly over the surface of Mars, and more. In the system, known as CAVE2, an 8-foot-high screen encircles the viewer 320 degrees.     The world’s largest scientific archive of animal signal recordings is housed at the Macaulay Library. The library is partnering with other institutions to curate and digitize an enormous archive of animal audio and video recordings from their vaults. The analogue material in the library’s collection includes recordings of birds, frogs, fish, and insects going back a few decades. Accessible digital audio recordings of these animal signals will make it easier for researchers to investigate a host of scientific questions. Part of the "Science Nation" series.

    Tornadoes claim hundreds of lives and cause billions of dollars in damages in the United States. With support from the National Science Foundation, computer scientist Amy McGovern at the University of Oklahoma is working to find answers to key questions about tornado formation. While video from storm chasers and data from Doppler radar can help meteorologists understand some aspects of tornadoes, McGovern uses supercomputers to find patterns in very large datasets. She also works with weather experts to help her sort out the information in the simulations. McGovern’s ultimate goal is to come up with reliable tornado forecasting system.

    The researchers are building scaffolds that mimic the three dimensional structure of human tissue. They use a machine called a biofabricator to deposit cancer cells at strategic locations inside the 3D structures, just like tumors in human flesh. These structures are high fidelity test systems. Burg and her team can culture cancer cells in them, experimenting to see which treatments are the most effective, with the ultimate goal of personalizing a treatment or a vaccine for individual patients.     When the water along Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay is thick and green, it may be a bad day for a swim, but it’s an excellent day for University of Rhode Island marine ecologist Carol Thornber. Thornber and her team are conducting a long-term study of the impacts of climate change on macroalgae, or seaweed, and algal blooms. She is investigating how the blooms affect fish stocks and oyster beds as well as how nutrients in the water from sewage treatment and agricultural runoff can feed the blooms and make them larger.     Mobile computing is accelerating beyond the smartphone era. Today, people wear smart glasses, smart watches, and fitness devices, and they carry smartphones, tablets, and laptops. In a decade, the very same people are likely to wear or carry tens of wireless devices and interact with the Internet and computing infrastructure in markedly different ways. Computer scientist Xia Zhou is working to make sure there are no traffic jams with the increased demand. With support from the National Science Foundation, Zhou and her team at Dartmouth College are developing ways to encode and transmit all that data faster and more securely.     Welcome to Barrow, Alaska, where a team of marine ecologists gears up to hit the sea ice that is actually teaming with marine life. With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Craig Aumack of Columbia University and a team have come here to investigate how algae in the sea ice contributes to the underlying marine ecosystems, and which marine organisms depend on the algae for nutrition.     While Earth's weather reports center on precipitation, temperature, wind direction, and humidity, space weather forecasts attempt to predict activity that occurs on the sun. Scientists also study how the weather on the sun will affect Earth. At the University of Michigan a team studies solar storms as they form and then barrel off the sun. Sometimes these storms hit the Earth with damaging force. Space weather has the potential to interfere with everything from satellite communications to electrical power. This team is aiming for a five-day forecast capability to give government, private industry, satellite operators, and power grid companies more time to take necessary action to protect critical infrastructure.     Understanding what happens at the epicenter of an earthquake, as the tectonic plates beneath the earth shift and the earth shakes, could help better predict when and where the next big one will hit. For the past six years scientists from a number of institutions have joined in a project called San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth, or SAFOD. They have drilled to the core of the San Andreas Fault, near Parkfield California, down to a specific area along the fault known to experience a number of small earthquakes every year. By retrieving and studying core rock samples from that site, geologists Chris Marone and Brett Carpenter and hydrogeologist Demian Saffer are getting a better understanding of the types of rocks involved in major quakes, versus the rocks present at more forgiving ones.

    Hurricane Sandy was the deadliest of the 2012 hurricane season and was the second costliest hurricane in U.S. history. University of Washington civil engineer Dorothy Reed and her team received a grant from the National Science Foundation to study how Hurricane Sandy affected the infrastructure of the New York Metropolitan area, including the power and transit systems. Reed and her team area creating highly detailed maps to construct a comprehensive street-by-street view of Sandy’s devastation.
