    Volcanic ash is known to present hazards to aviation, infrastructure, agriculture, and human and animal health. Airborne ash coats the exteriors of aircraft, enters modern jet engines and melts while coating the interior parts thus causing damage and failure. With support from the National Science Foundation, Volcanologist Dork Sahagian and his colleagues are learning more about the aerodynamic properties of ash, and how long different sizes and shapes stay in the atmosphere. They use a wind tunnel to study how ash travels in the atmosphere during and after volcanic eruptions. They want to develop ways to predict when and for how long damaging ash will fill the skies, and when it’s safe to fly again.

    Water is used by everyone, and in the process, a lot of it goes to waste. Whether it goes down drains, sewers, or toilets, much of it ends up at a wastewater treatment plant where it undergoes rigorous cleaning before it flows back to the environment. The process takes time, money and a lot of energy. What if that wastewater could be turned into energy? It almost sounds too good to be true, but environmental engineer Bruce Logan is working on ways to make it happen. With support from the National Science Foundation, Logan and his team at Penn State University are taking the idea a step further. They are developing microbial fuel cells to channel the bacteria's hard work into energy.

    The Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS) is a Science and Technology Center established by the National Science Foundation (NSF) with the mission of developing new technologies and computer models to measure and predict the response of sea level change. CReSIS provides students and faculty with opportunities to pursue exciting research in a variety of disciplines; to collaborate with world-class scientists and engineers in the US and abroad; and to make meaningful contributions to the ongoing, urgent work of addressing the impact of climate change.     David Stahle travels to ancient forests around the world, collecting tree rings to learn more about major climate and historical events dating back hundreds and thousands of years. With help from the National Science Foundation, he uses dendrochronology, or tree-ring dating, to get a snapshot of climate change over time. Stahle runs the Tree-ring Lab at the University of Arkansas, where he and fellow tree-ring researchers are learning that a trend of global warming began in the 1800s and continues today, brought about by changes in tropical sea surface temperatures of no more than a few tenths of a degree Celsius. Today Stahle is working with hydrologists and government planners in California and throughout Mexico to plan for drought and climate change events.

In this episode, soaring over the desert, Moko and Totemie finally see the blue expanse of the ocean. Then a string of tiny islands covered in green and white. Fascinated by the view, they don't notice the wind picking up. As the wind gets stronger it shakes their kite and Totemie lets go, and Moko lets go as well so she won't fall alone. They fall into the water in a beautiful lagoon which they discover together, their courage rewarded.

An old man tells them that once they get to the other side they will see what so many others have dreamt of seeing, but that they must fly like birds. He offers them a strange kite. As the wind picks up, they hang on tight and fly off from the salt pan.

As promised, he gives Mei Li's stone and Alarick's flute. She in turn gives him a present that he may only open when he arrives at his destination. One morning, he sees the coast of his land after battling through a tornado! When he gets to shore, he opens Totemie's gift and finds not only her bracelet, but also Mei-Lei's stone and Alarick's flute and realizes that the greatest gift has been meeting his new friends.

The two friends go off to find the source of this strange sound and what they see surprises them. Two men are blowing into what look like long horns while others walk along with them and sing. They head back towards their village, confident that they have solved the mystery of the echo.

    It was an email from a colleague that tipped off environmental engineer Detlef Knappe of possible 1,4-dioxane contamination in the Cape Fear River Basin, North Carolina’s largest watershed and a source of drinking water for communities across the state. The Environmental Protection Agency has classified 1,4-dioxane as a probable human carcinogen. With support from a National Science Foundation grant, Knappe and his team at North Carolina State University have begun to identify 1,4-dioxane sources and how 1,4-dioxane impacts drinking water quality. Knappe is also working with managers at water treatment plants and state policymakers in North Carolina to improve testing and treatment standards for 1,4-dioxane. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”

In this episode, Moko crosses the plains of Siberia and gets his first taste of the cold. After having found shelter in a cave for the night, he wakes to find a carpet of snow stretching out over the landscape as far as his eyes can see. Amazed at first, Moko realizes that he can no longer see his path and find his way. Could he have found the end of the world where distracted travelers get lost? At which point he notices footprints leading to a village.

Brings to light the connection between overpopulation and our most pressing environmental and humanitarian problems, as well as the solutions. Also, follows Beth, an American mother and child rights advocate, who grew up in a large family of 12 as she travels to Africa to witness first-hand the impact of population growth in the developing world and its role in exacerbating poverty. While there, she meets a young Ethiopian woman, Zinet, who comes from a poor family of 12, but has found the courage to break free from long-held cultural barriers holding back women. Features a broader discussion of the solutions to overpopulation in both the developed and developing world.

    In the Pacific Northwest, people are stripping moss for the horticultural trade at such an alarming rate that it's now illegal to harvest it. Ecologist Nalini Nadkarni knows that moss is a key component to the eco-system of the region, which makes it important to study. But this globe-trotting scientist at The Evergreen State College needed a lot of help recording research data from some folks who have much more time than she does. Where better to find potential research assistants with lots of time on their hands than the nearby medium security Cedar Creek Corrections Center? With support from the National Science Foundation, Nadkarni’s idea has been so successful that now the prisoners are starting bee keeping and composting programs, in addition to growing and recording data about moss.

In this episode, Moko is enjoying the seashore on the beach when Mei-Lei comes to get him to go fishing. They sail out into the sea and in the distance Moko sees what looks like a hill. Mei-Lei tells him that is actually a giant wave! All of a sudden, the tsunami lifts their boat high into the air and propels it forward. The wave crashes down and drops their boat right at the entrance to the village. Moko believes that they were kept safe because he knew to trust the ocean.

    Since the beginning of time, humans have used chemical reactions without understanding them. For example, ancient Greek artisans were able to smelt metal, dye fabrics, and make glass. The attempt to transform simple metal into gold and silver was known as alchemy (the forerunner of chemistry as we know it today). By mixing elements, alchemists created chemical reactions which produced new compounds. In this episode, Moko and Mei-Lei suddenly hear a continuous sound coming from beyond the beach. As they approach the hills, the sound gets louder and Mei-Lei is more frightened, so Moko decides to go around the dune on his own. As he does so, the sound changes and becomes more of a song. Moko returns and tells Mei-Lei that it is the sand and the ground singing together. Moko thinks that the magical dune is urging him to go on with his travels and he knows that this is likely his last day in the village.

Moko wanders off to find inhabitants of this new place. Along his route he passes plants with enormous leaves and at the other end of his path, the beach once again! How is this possible? What is the secret of this strange islandy? Night falls and Moko falls asleep convinced that he is the first traveler to discover the ocean's secret island.

He climbs the tallest tree he can find and looks out towards the landscape and sees that the trees stretch out as far as the eye can see. Moko wonders if this is what the end of the world looks like. He feels quite alone and makes a wish to the stars to put a new friend on his path.

    Jupiter's moon Europa may have an ocean more than twice the size of Earth's oceans combined. Why do scientists think so? A spacecraft collected evidence that revealed Europa's surface is mostly made of water. It also showed lots of cracks and ridges, but not many craters, which may indicate a large hidden ocean.
