    At first glance, the bone-dry landscape of the Atacama Desert in Chile might seem inhospitable. But, it’s prime real estate for astronomers. This desert is now home to the largest ground-based radio telescope in the world called the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array or “ALMA for short.     Anole lizards are highly territorial and typically stick close to their home tree. So, what happens when a team of researchers carries them far away into the forest? Will they find their way back? Dr. Manuel Leal and colleagues designed an experiment to find out. They displaced the lizards from their home territories and then tracked their movements using radio transmitters. Most of the lizards were able to orient themselves and head in the right direction, with some making a beeline back to their original tree in less than 24 hours.

    Kathy Blake is blind but two years ago she got a glimmer of hope. She heard about an artificial retina being developed by a company called Second Sight and the Doheny Eye Institute in Los Angeles. It was experimental, but Kathy was the perfect candidate. With funding from the National Science Foundation, a camera is built into a pair of glasses, sending radio signals to a tiny chip in the back of the retina. The chip, small enough to fit on a fingertip, is implanted surgically and stimulates nerves that lead to the vision center of the brain.
