  • Person filling a glass from a faucet. Caption: our risk of contracting some form of cancer would go up.

It was an email from a colleague that tipped off environmental engineer Detlef Knappe of possible 1,4-dioxane contamination in the Cape Fear River Basin, North Carolina’s largest watershed and a source of drinking water for communities across the state. The Environmental Protection Agency has classified 1,4-dioxane as a probable human carcinogen. With support from a National Science Foundation grant, Knappe and his team at North Carolina State University have begun to identify 1,4-dioxane sources and how 1,4-dioxane impacts drinking water quality. Knappe is also working with managers at water treatment plants and state policymakers in North Carolina to improve testing and treatment standards for 1,4-dioxane. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”

In the Pacific Northwest, people are stripping moss for the horticultural trade at such an alarming rate that it's now illegal to harvest it. Ecologist Nalini Nadkarni knows that moss is a key component to the eco-system of the region, which makes it important to study. But this globe-trotting scientist at The Evergreen State College needed a lot of help recording research data from some folks who have much more time than she does. Where better to find potential research assistants with lots of time on their hands than the nearby medium security Cedar Creek Corrections Center? With support from the National Science Foundation, Nadkarni’s idea has been so successful that now the prisoners are starting bee keeping and composting programs, in addition to growing and recording data about moss.

  • Illustration of sand with an arrow moving from the sky across the image. Caption: This is called quicksand.

Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, Moko and Mei-Lei head off to the forest to pick some plants that can't be found anywhere else. Moko is following Mei-Lei's lead as she knows what to do. She picks a leaf and lets it float away, and Moko picks it up. All of a sudden, both his feet sink into the quicksand and he can't get free. Some fishermen come to his rescue and they pull him to safety. Moko and Mei-Lei head back towards the village thinking that the forest is jealous and possessive, since it clearly wanted to keep every leaf and every plant for itself.

  • Illustration of sand dunes. Caption: Water on the surface of the ground evaporates quickly

Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, Moko had gone to see his friend, the wise old man who lives on the other side of the village. There were such pretty flowers that Moko could spend the entire day contemplating them. The old man picked a beautiful rose and handed it to Moko. But on the way back, the sun was so hot that the flower began to wilt. Moko was so sad that he laid the withered rose on the ground and started to cry. The wind rose, sweeping across the ground. Moko then saw that his rose was still there, more beautiful than ever and sparkling, its petals solid as stone. It had become a desert rose, as rare as water in the desert.

  • Illustration of trees growing on a mountain. Caption: Some of these forests grow on mountains.

Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, Moko and Mei-Lei are resting in the shade of a tall tree. Mei-Lei is wondering whether Moko will be leaving her and saddened by this thought she walks away. Moko sets off to try to find her in the tropical forest. Droplets of water stream down from the trees like rain. Night falls and Moko can no longer see anything. He decides to wait until morning to go on. The next morning, Mei-Lei has returned and she is smiling because she sees that she must mean a lot to Moko since he came all this way to find her. He thinks that the trees have stopped crying now that Mei-Lei is no longer sad.

  • Illustration of a barren landscape with rain falling. Caption (narrator) In tropical climates, there are only two seasons:

Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, Moko wonders why all the clouds come and cry over his village at the same time. What makes them so sad? He questions the wise old man of the village, who suggests that he wait till the end of the rainy season for the answer. Once the rains are over, Moko goes back to see the old man. The old man tells him that the answer lies in the fields and the crops. Moko sees that the rain has allowed so many things to grow, and that the village has all the food it needs. So he realizes that the clouds are not sad when it rains, but rather that they give all their water to fertilize the soil.

  • Illustration of a cluster of green plants in the middle of a dry landscape. Caption: That's what we call an oasis.

Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, one day, it was very hot and the earth was very dry. Concerned that no rain was coming, Moko set out to find a man believed to be a wizard. The man told him to follow the path of the dunes, which would take him to a sea of sand. Moko walked for a long time. Suddenly a strange shape appeared in the distance. It resembled trees surrounding a small pond. But a few steps later he couldn't see it anymore. It had vanished into the immensity of the desert. Moko scanned the horizon again. He turned full circle and once again saw the pretty pond and surrounding trees. He walked toward it slowly, never taking his eyes off it, his heart pounding. This time he reached the edge of the small oasis, relaxed in its freshness and drank.
