    Cubelets are magnetic, electronic building blocks, each with a small computer inside, that can be connected in many different ways to move around a table, follow a hand signal, turn on a light, play sounds, or do many other creative tasks. They were developed by Eric Schweikardt and his team at Modular Robotics, with support from the National Science Foundation’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. These 21st century building blocks are meant to help kids learn about the basics of robotics while boosting their confidence to solve problems.

    El Niño and La Niña are periodic weather patterns resulting from interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere in the Pacific Ocean. Ocean temperatures indicate the presence of El Niño and La Niña, which sometimes lead to extreme weather in many parts of the United States. NOAA climatologists closely track the development of these oscillating systems, which typically last between one to two years. With so much at stake, it’s critical to be able to monitor and forecast when El Niño or La Niña is developing so governments, businesses, and private citizens can prepare.

    Kathy Blake is blind but two years ago she got a glimmer of hope. She heard about an artificial retina being developed by a company called Second Sight and the Doheny Eye Institute in Los Angeles. It was experimental, but Kathy was the perfect candidate. With funding from the National Science Foundation, a camera is built into a pair of glasses, sending radio signals to a tiny chip in the back of the retina. The chip, small enough to fit on a fingertip, is implanted surgically and stimulates nerves that lead to the vision center of the brain.

    With support from the National Science Foundation, mechanical and computer engineer Nilanjan Sarkar and psychologist Zachary Warren at Vanderbilt University have developed a learning environment for kids with autism, built around state-of-the-art technologies. One of those state-of-the-art technologies is a humanoid robot, nicknamed Russell, who works with the children on their ability to imitate others. The robot has some of the characteristics of a human, but it’s not as complex, so it doesn’t overstimulate or overwhelm a child with autism.

They use several steps in developing new products: design phase, testing phase, and production and maintenance phase. They also consider cost, reliability, and safety. During the last two phases, engineers determine if any failures of the components are likely and where they occur. It is notable for its use of celebrity talent and being both highly entertaining and educational. Ms. Frizzle's class takes a field trip inside a 1950s sci-fi film. The movie's main character, the power-mad General Araneus is determined to destroy the mantis, but Phoebe wants to trap it and save it.     This project envisions a future where 3-D robotic systems can be produced and designed using 2-D desktop technology fabrication methods.     His name is HERB (Home Exploring Robot Butler) and he’s a robotic butler designed to open doors, clean tables, and even retrieve slippers. He doesn't look as human as his Japanese counterparts, but HERB has a bigger brain according to its developer Siddhartha Srinivasa at Intel Labs located on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University. With funding from the National Science Foundation, HERB is being programmed to think and function on its own and to navigate unknown environments.

In a decade, the very same people are likely to wear or carry tens of wireless devices and interact with the Internet and computing infrastructure in markedly different ways. Computer scientist Xia Zhou is working to make sure there are no traffic jams with the increased demand. With support from the National Science Foundation, Zhou and her team at Dartmouth College are developing ways to encode and transmit all that data faster and more securely.
