    University of Colorado engineer Abby Watrous is on a mission in rural China, converting coal-burning homes and cook stoves into cleaner-burning models. With funding from the National Science Foundation, this civil and environmental engineer is helping to develop renewable energy technologies in developing communities. Watrous and her colleagues are looking at ways to help more people use biomass.

    In Miki, Japan, a six-story wooden model condominium was shaken by the equivalent of a 7.5 magnitude earthquake. The test was said to be the largest simulated earthquake ever attempted with a wooden structure. The full-scale building sat on a metal shake table that rocked it violently back and forth. The table, designed to hold up to 2.5 million pounds, reproduced forces based on those recorded during the 1994 earthquake in Northridge, California. But, it was scaled up by 180 percent to simulate an earthquake so violent it would only occur an average of once every 2,500 years. Part of the "Science Nation" series.

    Third in the series of three productions designed to let students learn by doing, guiding them through the science and history behind the Wright Brothers' invention of powered flight. This third component contains the same "how to" segments from the second in the series (13692) and parts of the history and scientific concepts from the first in the series (13691). However, it also provides greater ease and flexibility in locating, reviewing, and pausing in and between segments than the other two productions in the series. Good for sharing with students to aid them as they build and experiment with kites, gliders, and rubber-band-powered planes.

    Proteins are the workhorses of cells. With support from the National Science Foundation, University of Arkansas biochemist James Hinton has been researching their structure and function for decades. Back in the 1990’s, he had a vision to study these huge protein structures in 3D and now, in cooperation with a company called Virtalis, his vision has become a reality. The new system allows researchers to enlarge the visual of a protein to room-size, so they can examine it from all angles, to better understand its structure and function. The new 3D visuals are also helping Hinton realize his other vision to better engage students in his discoveries and science in general.

    The Magic School Bus is an award winning animated children’s television series based on the book series of the same title by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen. It is notable for its use of celebrity talent and being both highly entertaining and educational. Ms. Frizzle takes the kids to space when Dorothy Ann says she's discovered an asteroid headed straight for their school. During their mission, the class learns the difference between meteor, asteroids and comets. They also try to find a way to change the rotation of the asteroid around the sun so that it doesn't hit Earth.

    Meteorologists studying clouds in Europe are learning about the microphysical processes that occur naturally in clouds. This knowledge helps researchers gain new fundamental knowledge that can help improve weather and climate forecast models. Students will discover how scientists study cloud formation by generating artificial clouds in a laboratory. Scientists research how clouds originate and how they react to surrounding natural elements. They will reveal how microwave radiometers, lasers, and satellites are used in researching cloud development.

    Solutions are uniform mixtures of molecules in which any of the phases of matter can be dissolved in another phase. Whether solids, liquids, or gases, solution chemistry is important because most chemical reactions, whether in the laboratory or in nature, take place in solutions. In particular, solutions with water as the solvent are the core of all biology. Extending the particle model of matter to solutions enables chemists to predict what will happen to a deep-sea diver who breathes different mixtures of gases or to the life forms in the ocean as carbon dioxide levels rise in the atmosphere.     The image of a rat sniffing around for food with its little whiskers moving back and forth to help satisfy its appetite is enough to make most people lose theirs. But those whiskers play a valuable role in helping rats determine what is in the environment around them. With support from the National Science Foundation, Mitra Hartmann and colleagues at Northwestern University in Chicago are constructing whiskered robots that can detect and then project three-dimensional virtual images of objects on to a computer screen. Scientists here don't think it's so far-fetched that one day robotic rovers, much like the ones on Mars now, might contain a set of whiskers to help them navigate the terrain around them.

    To diagnose prostate cancer, urologists John Wei and pathologists, Scott Tomlins, at the University of Michigan Medical Center, use biomarkers, which are biochemical signatures in blood, urine, and tissue that suggest the disease may be present. With support from the National Science Foundation, engineer Brian Denton is working with a multidisciplinary team that includes Wei and Tomlins to develop a quicker and less expensive way to evaluate biomarkers, using computational models.     Researchers at the state-of-the-art Structural Engineering and Materials Laboratory at the Georgia Institute of Technology are using a full-scale model building to test new ways to protect structures from earthquakes and potentially save lives. The three-story concrete building is based on designs common through much of the 20th century. It has been subjected to round after round of simulated temblors to test if materials such as carbon fiber or new shape-memory alloys can be used to reinforce the structure so it would remain standing in moderate to strong earthquakes. With support from the National Science Foundation, structural engineer Reginald DesRoches and his team have developed a series of retrofits of varying cost and intrusiveness to give building owners in quake-prone areas a range of choices for hardening their property.

    Parasitoid insects are veritable serial killers, and they play a major role in the regulation of insect populations. Scientific research on the lines of a criminal investigation reveals how these killers behave and what remarkable capabilities they have. In basic research, parasitoids make excellent models for behavioral ecology studies. They are also used in applied research, notably for biological control, where they can serve as precious auxiliaries for controlling crop pests. Parasitoids still have many secrets to reveal, and new research avenues are opening up.

    Neuroanatomist Jacopo Annese is looking for 1,000 brains. The Director of the Brain Observatory at the University of California, San Diego is on a quest to collect, dissect, and digitize images of the human brain for the Digital Brain Library, which was launched with support from the National Science Foundation. Annese and his team look for connections, mapping brain structure and connecting it to human behavior. He believes that with a large enough catalog of brains preserved as virtual models, scientists can explore the organ in ways unheard of, revealing new insights into what makes the brain tick.

Examines the behavior of light as it passes through physical substances in a collection of 23 computer-animated video shorts. Outlines Ptolemy's Law of Refraction and the concept of angle of incidence by examining light's motion through air, water, glass, and other media. Explores Snell's Law by highlighting the importance of a refractive index along with displacement, deviation, dispersion, and the role of refraction in fiber optics. Studies lens types including biconvex, convex meniscus, plano-convex, and concave models, in addition to telescopes, magnifying glasses, and the human eye.

    One of the major challenges in robotics is designing robots that can move over uneven, loose, or unexpected terrain. The team studies the biomechanics of animals adept at running on rough ground to program the algorithms that power their computer simulations.     Sea spray aerosols occur naturally in the salty ocean air, and there’s much more in each of those tiny bursting bubbles than salt. They’re bursting with ocean life, from bacteria to phytoplankton--even viruses. Because sea spray aerosols seed clouds, they affect the climate. With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), atmospheric chemist Kimberly Prather of the University of California, San Diego, and chemist Vicki Grassian of the University of Iowa are leading a team of scientists around the country who are working to better understand what role sea spray aerosols play in weather and climate change climate models.
