    What happens in your brain when you get lost or forget something? Johns Hopkins University Neuroscientist Amy Shelton believes she can find the answer. With funding from the National Science Foundation, she’s testing human spatial recognition. Study subjects learn and recall their way around a virtual maze while an MRI scans their brains. By analyzing MRI images of blood flow in the human, Shelton can get a picture of how the brain learns and recalls the spatial world outside the body. By understanding those processes, she believes she can develop techniques that will help improve human memory.

    Researchers at the state-of-the-art Structural Engineering and Materials Laboratory at the Georgia Institute of Technology are using a full-scale model building to test new ways to protect structures from earthquakes and potentially save lives. The three-story concrete building is based on designs common through much of the 20th century. It has been subjected to round after round of simulated temblors to test if materials such as carbon fiber or new shape-memory alloys can be used to reinforce the structure so it would remain standing in moderate to strong earthquakes. With support from the National Science Foundation, structural engineer Reginald DesRoches and his team have developed a series of retrofits of varying cost and intrusiveness to give building owners in quake-prone areas a range of choices for hardening their property.

    Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, one morning, Totemie takes Moko to pick wild mushrooms used for medicine by her people. There is a particularly rare one she is hoping to find. Moko suddenly slips in a crevice. Totemie runs to her village to get an old man who tells her that she should join Moko. When she does, Moko and Totemie discover an enormous cave filled with lakes in a rainbow of colors. They follow a stream that eventually becomes a river and on the river's bank they find the old man who is waiting for them. Before they leave to go back to the village, the old man asks them to keep this magical cave a secret and to keep the memory of it safe in their mind.
