  • Sculpture of a dragon made from stone inlaid on a flat surface. Caption: It can create life, but it can also destroy it,

The fourth in a series of five documentaries focuses on the omnipresence of spirituality in the Greater Mekong. The values of prosperity, as they are enhanced by the Western World, are in complete opposition with the values of renouncement of material wealth commended by Buddhist philosophy. As a matter of fact, over 90 % of the population of the Greater Mekong is Buddhist. The region is full of temples and pagodas because the spirits, the gods and the demons too are part of everyday life. They are the heroes of all festive events. It is especially the dragon, a symbol of superhuman forces, of spirituality and supreme power that still lives in the heart of the festive traditions of this part of the world. • Wire frame diagram of a round building with columns and arches. Caption: They're rebuilding Rome pixel by pixel

The ancient city of Rome wasn't built in a day, but now that city, along with all its famous landmarks, can be digitized in just a matter of hours. A new computer program under development at the University of Washington in Seattle combs through hundreds of thousands of tourist photos on Flickr and other photo sharing sites and reconstructs the city – pixel by pixel. Now, viewers can fly around many of Rome's famous landmarks on their computer in far more detail than they'd ever be able to on current virtual map programs such as Google Earth. The new technique may one day create online maps that offer viewers a virtual-reality experience. The software could build cities for video games automatically, instead of doing so by hand.

  • Person adjusting objects on a table next to a mechanical object with legs. Caption: (Rus) My goal is to make robots more capable, more autonomous--

This project envisions a future where 3-D robotic systems can be produced and designed using 2-D desktop technology fabrication methods. If this feat is achieved, it would be possible for the average person to design, customize, and print a specialized robot in a matter of hours. This new project would completely automate the process, from sketches on-demand, anywhere, and with the skill of a team of professional engineers, leading to potential transformations in advanced manufacturing. The Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, known as CSAIL is focused on conducting groundbreaking research in artificial intelligence, computer systems, and the theory of computation, while also tackling pressing societal challenges such as education, health care, manufacturing and transportation. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”

  • Carved wooden levers. Caption: I want a fully operational Gutenberg-style one.

Stephen Fry, writer and actor, gathers a team of craftsmen to help him build a copy of Gutenberg's printing press and sets himself the task of learning how to make the paper and type to print as Gutenberg once did. These practical trials and tests demonstrate the brilliance of Gutenberg's invention and bring the man and his machine to life. Also investigates why printing mattered so much to Gutenberg and his contemporaries, exploring the political and religious turmoil that shaped Gutenberg's world.
