Part of the "Branches on the Tree of Life" series. Phylum Mollusca is the second most diverse phylum of animals, with over 100,000 known species. First examined are the basic characteristics of the phylum-a soft body, muscular foot, mantle cavity with gill, and hard calcified shell. Studies the four most familiar classes of molluscs (chitons, gastropods, bivalves, and cephalopods) in depth, viewing structure, life history, adaptations, and ecological interactions.

Why do some birds, like raptors, move from one region to another at certain times of the year? It is all about their interactions with the environment. The primary factor is scarcity in a food source. Another factor includes changes in the weather. This episode explains the seasonal events that affect the raptor’s migration and provides a platform to investigate the types of relationships found in their ecosystem. Part of the "Seasonal Science" series.
It is late spring on Kodiak Island, Alaska, and all eyes are on the horizon for one of nature’s most graceful giants: the gray whale. It is here that they begin and end the longest migration of any mammal. They will travel 12,000 miles from the icy waters of the Arctic to the warm lagoons of Baja, Mexico, and back again. Today, nearly 24,000 gray whales continue their annual migration along the coast of North America giving humans a glimpse of these majestic creatures that live in the deep.
Recapping themes from the prior modules and previewing the junco research of the future, this closing segment reinforces the broad range of important scientific findings involving the Junco. Featuring sound bites from more than a dozen diverse scientists who study juncos, this segment emphasizes the importance of emerging genetic and genomic research tools to complement research in the field. Viewers are reminded to consider all that can be learned from a little backyard bird. Part of Ordinary Extraordinary Junco (Outro).
Provides an overview of all the stages to ensure a kitten grows up to become a happy, healthy, and much-loved addition to a family. Cats have an extra sense organ, and they can actually "taste" smell. In relation to their body size, cats have the largest eyes of any mammal. The cat's grace and beauty have inspired artists since ancient times. By Victorian times they became pampered pets. Cats are loving and affectionate but have an independent character that guarantees them a special place in the hearts of their caregivers. NOTE: Bonus material follows main feature.
First in a three-part series exploring the history of race perceptions and behaviors towards races in the United States. Explores how recent scientific discoveries have toppled the concept of biological race. Follows a dozen high school students who sequence and compare their own mitochondrial DNA looking for a "race marker," with surprising results. Also looks at the history of racism in the United States, the advent of stereotypes based on physical attributes attributed to races, and somatotypes, with particular reference to African Americans.
Visible light, which can be seen with human eyes, comprises a small sliver of the electromagnetic spectrum. The rest of the spectrum, from short wavelength gamma rays to long-wavelength radio waves, requires special instruments to detect. ALMA uses an array of radio telescopes to detect and study radio waves from space. ALMA is an advanced tool for studying very old stars and galaxies. These objects now are seen at great cosmic distances, with most of their light stretched out to millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths by the expansion of the universe. ALMA provides the unprecedented ability to study the processes of star and planet formation.
Scientist William Rowan is renowned for his research on the dark-eyed junco. Before Rowan, it was unknown what environmental cues animals used to time the seasonal changes in their biology. Through a groundbreaking experiment with the junco, Rowan discovered the physiological reaction of organisms to the length of day or night. Shot as an historical re-enactment, this segment provides a glimpse into the history and human dimensions of scientific research and reveals one of the first studies that made juncos well-known to biologists. Part of Ordinary Extraordinary Junco (Chapter 1).
The goal of this research is to determine the mechanisms underlying predatory and defensive behavior guided by an extraordinarily novel sensor in snakes. Pit vipers, pythons and boas possess special organs that form images in the brain of the thermal environment, much like vision occurs in the human brain. Thus, these snakes see heat, and this amazing system is the most sensitive infrared detector on Earth, natural or artificial. A better understanding of infrared-based thermal imaging in snakes is important not only for understanding complex behavior in these highly efficient predators, but also for understanding the evolution of imaging sensors and the behaviors they support in other animals including people. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”
Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, Moko crosses the plains of Siberia and gets his first taste of the cold. After having found shelter in a cave for the night, he wakes to find a carpet of snow stretching out over the landscape as far as his eyes can see. Amazed at first, Moko realizes that he can no longer see his path and find his way. Could he have found the end of the world where distracted travelers get lost? At which point he notices footprints leading to a village.
Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, one day, it was very hot and the earth was very dry. Concerned that no rain was coming, Moko set out to find a man believed to be a wizard. The man told him to follow the path of the dunes, which would take him to a sea of sand. Moko walked for a long time. Suddenly a strange shape appeared in the distance. It resembled trees surrounding a small pond. But a few steps later he couldn't see it anymore. It had vanished into the immensity of the desert. Moko scanned the horizon again. He turned full circle and once again saw the pretty pond and surrounding trees. He walked toward it slowly, never taking his eyes off it, his heart pounding. This time he reached the edge of the small oasis, relaxed in its freshness and drank.
Tornadoes, the most violent weather phenomena on earth, can occur anywhere in the world. Most, however, happen in the United States in "tornado alley," the states of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Briefly relates the weather conditions necessary to produce tornadoes. Ride with storm chasers as they pursue these violent storms. Eyewitness accounts, time-lapse photography, and film footage capture the destructive power of tornadoes.
When Genoveva opens her magic book, the screen is filled with feathers, beaks, horns, legs, wings, and snouts. Genoveva's magic book transports her to various habitats where she learns about the animals that live there. In this episode, Genoveva watches as a pair of eyelashes and two large humps appear between the wind and the sand of the mysterious desert. Genoveva visits the world of camels.
I think what your eyesight does is confirm other senses, says James Robertshaw, a world champion kite flyer and for two years personal assistant to Rory Heap. Heap has been blind from birth, but with Robertshaw's assistance pursues his ambition for kite flying--particularly of complicated figure eight patterns. Using all of his senses except for sight, Heap learns how to fly a kite with the same dexterity that Robertshaw uses to guide him through busy city streets.
A humorous film that poses fundamental questions about the origins of man. Tells the story of the hunt for Bigfoot (also called Sasquatch) by four men who have been tracking this mythical creature for the last 40 years. Reveals their hardships, history, and battles to bring Bigfoot out of the woods and into the real world. Includes eyewitness accounts of sightings. Intercut with monster-movie footage.
