Photographer Krista Schlyer and biologist Jon Beckman study how fabricated barriers influence the movement of wildlife. Schlyer and Beckmann have seen the damaging impacts resulting from the wall built along the Mexico-United States border. Humans probably will not stop constructing walls and fences any time soon, but planning the boundaries with wildlife in mind can help prevent these structures from causing environmental harm. Computer scientist Xia Zhou is working to make sure there are no traffic jams with the increased demand.     These city kids from Boston may not look like conventional farmers, but they’re spending part of their summer getting their hands dirty. They’re learning how to build solar-powered hydroponic systems that grow organic vegetables without soil. With support from the National Science Foundation, Boston College educator Mike Barnett and his team developed the Urban Hydrofarmers Project to engage students in math and science through hydroponic farming and green energy technology. And, because the teens sell what they grow at farmers’ markets, the students get to experience green entrepreneurship. Barnett and his team have also partnered with the STEM Garden Institute to bring hydroponic farming into classrooms throughout the U.S. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”

    In this episode, citizens and scientists partner to gather data on many environmental concerns around the world. A group of citizen scientists track air and water pollution at fracking sites in Wyoming and 5 other states. They use simple but science-based techniques developed by the “Bucket Brigade.” Volunteers from Trout Unlimited monitor water quality regularly, generating baseline data that will prove invaluable in the event of future pollution events. Community members connected with professional researchers explore Flint’s drinking water crisis and help other cities test their water quality. In China, citizens use government data and a unique mobile app to report environmental crimes. Part of "The Crowd and the Cloud" series.

    From cleaning supplies to pharmaceuticals, surfactants are the compounds that make soap bubbly, paint spread smoothly, and medication dissolve more easily. Most surfactants are currently made from non-renewable petroleum sources and many of these surfactants don’t break down easily after they are discarded. Some can persist in the environment for decades. Their widespread use and environmental persistence has raised concerns about toxicity. At the University of Arizona, Jeanne Pemberton and her cross-disciplinary team work to create new “green” surfactants based on sugars that are generally known as glycolipids. With support from the National Science Foundation, Pemberton and her team are exploring the recent discovery of a versatile synthesis that allows production of many different types of glycolipids in large quantities. Some of these glycolipids are modeled after naturally occurring biosurfactants and some can be produced relatively inexpensively using renewable natural resources. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”
