  • Dry, brown hilly terrain. Caption: The landscape and the vegetation changed rapidly.

Powerful forces have forged the conditions on Earth that have made life possible. The millennia have been witnesses to the formation of the planet: its singular position in relation to the sun, the evolution of the continents, and the birth of entire mountain chains. All of these elements combine to create Earth’s constantly changing climate. Homo sapiens emerge into this unpredictable and violent world, fighting for survival from the start. It is these early humans’ ability to adapt that allows them to triumph even in the face of incredible adversity and sets the path for modern man. Part of the "How Climate Made History" series.

  • Hollow glass tube with roughly diamond shaped object in the center surrounded by glowing light. Caption: you get the characteristic color of this purplish-blue.

Using light as a probe, scientists found innovative ways to make inferences about the inner structure of the atom. In this unit, scientists discuss the change from believing the atom was a single indivisible particle to later understanding the atom is composed of subatomic parts. This new picture of matter lead to the development of the quantum model of the atom, as well as ways to identify traces of chemical elements, whether on earth, in the sun, or in a distant galaxy. Part of the series Chemistry: Challenges And Solutions.

  • Small, furry animal with a pointed head and nose. Caption: meerkats emerge just after sunrise.

Explores the open savannahs of Africa, particularly the mammals that inhabit them and the trees that border the grasslands. Shows how the different animals interact with each other and the non-living elements of their habitat to maintain a healthy balance. Also investigates the threat from an increasing human population for homes, food, other resources, and the resultant threat to the survival of many animal groups. Looks at international breeding programs around the world, which were established to protect these animals and enable them to reproduce in captivity, so their gene pool is preserved.

  • Empty sand beach. Caption: When the Maori arrived to New Zealand in 900 AD it was one of the last places on earth to be settled by humans.

When the Maori arrived to New Zealand in 900 AD, it was one of the last places to be settled on earth by humans. They brought many elements of their Polynesian culture to the Islands, but none transformed the landscape as much as their use of fire. Modern Maori scholars shed light on the important role that fire has always played in their lives, as well as the inherent sense of conservation that is embedded in their culture and approach to the land. Part of WildFIRE PIRE series.

  • Person sitting in front of a computer screen. Caption: are able to solve the puzzle after a night's rest.

Anna has built a successful business from the ground up, and upon retirement, she leaves the company to her employees, not to her son. What does that decision tell us about Anna's psychology and about the development of the human brain over a lifetime? Explores the emotional and neurological elements of learning, explaining how the brain processes and stores experiences and prepares for future decision-making. Employing real-to-life dramatizations, Anna's journey from innocent teenager to philosophical retiree--and the changes that take place in her cortex, hippocampus, and neural synapses as she faces and overcomes challenges--are all depicted. In addition, several influential brain experiments from the past decade are described.
