  • Planet Earth with nebulous green and blue light coming towards it. Caption: except that they travel at different speeds

The Big Bang theory is currently the most popular scientific theory for the origin of the universe. It describes how the universe emerged from an enormously dense and hot state about 13.7 billion years ago and how the universe is still expanding from that point. This theory helps scientists explain the formation of all the galaxies, stars, and planets.

  • Bubbling hot plasma. Caption: superheated into a plasma that burns at millions of degrees.

It is a fireball in the sky, a bubbling, boiling, kinetic sphere of white hot plasma, exploding and erupting. Its size is almost unimaginable--one million Earths would fit within its boundaries. In this violence is born almost all the energy that makes existence on Earth possible. Yet, its full mysteries are only now beginning to be understood. From sunspots to solar eclipses, solar flares to solar storms, the birth of the sun to its potential death, discover the science and history behind this celestial object that makes life on Earth exist.

  • View of Saturn in space. Caption: "Saturn: Lord of the Rings."

Are the rings of Saturn a real celestial phenomenon or merely a cosmic illusion? Technology allows the experts to get closer to the furthest planet visible to the naked eye. Old questions are answered and new ones arise. Does Saturn hold the key to Earth's weather and will one of its moons supply us with all the oil we'll ever need? Cutting-edge computer graphics are used to show what life would be like on other planets and to imagine what kinds of life forms might evolve in alien atmospheres.

  • Circular tunnel with pipe conduit along the walls and a large, central tube. Caption: (narrator) At CERN, the Higgs is only the beginning.

The search for a mysterious subatomic particle can certainly involve some enormous tools, not to mention a multitude of scientists. The Higgs boson is a subatomic particle that gives other particles, such as quarks and electrons, their mass. With support from the National Science Foundation, physicists Michael Tuts at Columbia University and Kyle Cranmer at New York University are among the 21st century explorers who have been on the hunt for the Higgs. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”

  • An Illustration depicts the three positions of the universe. The difference between the first two and the last two positions is labeled, + 2 units. The difference between the first and last positions is labeled, + 4 units. Caption: the more the expansion pushes them apart.

In this episode, Dr. Varoujan Gorjian explains the mind-boggling expansion of the universe. He uses a balloon to demonstrate how space is expanding. Part of the "Ask an Astronomer" series.

  • White glowing orb against a black grid. Caption: Weakly Interacting Massive Particle

Dark matter is a scientific mystery. But physicists like Dan McKinsey theorize it must exist because without it, the universe would look quite different. With support from the National Science Foundation, McKinsey and a team of scientists from across the U.S. and Europe are hard at work on the Large Underground Xenon, or LUX, experiment. Nearly a mile straight down an old mine shaft at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, the team searches for the existence of one possible type of dark matter called weakly interacting massive particles, or WIMPs. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”

Gabriela, Manuel and Leonardo are three friends who accidentally start a rocket that takes them to space. Their journey through space takes them to different planets and strange worlds. Throughout their journey, they have the help of Maqui, an on-board computer. Maqui helps them learn about the universe. The three friends believe they have landed on a planet, but later they learn that they are on a comet. They learn the difference between comets and asteroids.

  • Image of the sun from above Earth. Caption: And the clock is ticking toward magnetic apocalypse.

It bursts from the sun with the power of ten thousand nuclear weapons... and when it hits our planet, it could create the largest disaster in recorded history. A magnetic storm from the sun could wipe out electrical power, television, radio, military communication, and nearly every piece of electronics in the Northern Hemisphere. Learn about a planet-wide "hurricane" of magnetic forces called "Solar Katrina" that could permanently scramble all 21st Century technology. What causes this magnetic superstorm and why is it so powerful? And is there anything we can do to prevent the Magnetic Storm?
