    Mobile computing is accelerating beyond the smartphone era. Today, people wear smart glasses, smart watches, and fitness devices, and they carry smartphones, tablets, and laptops. In a decade, the very same people are likely to wear or carry tens of wireless devices and interact with the Internet and computing infrastructure in markedly different ways. Computer scientist Xia Zhou is working to make sure there are no traffic jams with the increased demand. With support from the National Science Foundation, Zhou and her team at Dartmouth College are developing ways to encode and transmit all that data faster and more securely. Part of the "Science Nation" series.

    Harvard University, electrical engineers Rob Wood and Gu-Yeon Wei, and computer scientist Radhika Nagpal created the “RoboBee,” a miniature flying robot, inspired by the biology of a bee and the insect’s hive behavior. With support from the National Science Foundation and a program called Expeditions in Computing, Wood put together a diverse team of collaborators to get the RoboBee project off the ground. Ultimately, the researchers hope to build a colony in which the RoboBees interact, using their hive as a refueling station. They say RoboBees have the potential to be useful in a number of ways, including search and rescue missions, traffic monitoring, and weather mapping.     Proteins are the workhorses of cells. With support from the National Science Foundation, University of Arkansas biochemist James Hinton has been researching their structure and function for decades. Back in the 1990’s, he had a vision to study these huge protein structures in 3D and now, in cooperation with a company called Virtalis, his vision has become a reality. The new system allows researchers to enlarge the visual of a protein to room-size, so they can examine it from all angles, to better understand its structure and function. The new 3D visuals are also helping Hinton realize his other vision to better engage students in his discoveries and science in general.

    Gabriela, Manuel and Leonardo are three friends who accidentally start a rocket that takes them to space. Their journey through space takes them to different planets and strange worlds. Throughout their journey, they have the help of Maqui, an on-board computer. Maqui helps them learn about the universe. The friends experience a very beautiful phenomenon known as a star cluster. Maqui tells them that it is an accumulation of stars that holds together as a family. They try to watch it with a telescope, but the telescope gets loose from the spaceship and lands in a planet close by. Their plan is to recover it during the night so they are not seen, but soon they discover that the star cluster prevents the sky from getting dark.

    The image of a rat sniffing around for food with its little whiskers moving back and forth to help satisfy its appetite is enough to make most people lose theirs. But those whiskers play a valuable role in helping rats determine what is in the environment around them. With support from the National Science Foundation, Mitra Hartmann and colleagues at Northwestern University in Chicago are constructing whiskered robots that can detect and then project three-dimensional virtual images of objects on to a computer screen. Scientists here don't think it's so far-fetched that one day robotic rovers, much like the ones on Mars now, might contain a set of whiskers to help them navigate the terrain around them.

    With support from the National Science Foundation, computer scientists at the University of Illinois at Chicago are pushing science fiction closer to reality. They have created a wraparound virtual world in which a researcher wearing 3D glasses can take a walk through a human brain, fly over the surface of Mars, and more. In the system, known as CAVE2, an 8-foot-high screen encircles the viewer 320 degrees. A panorama of images springs from display panels, conveying a sense of being able to touch what's not really there. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”

    Anna has built a successful business from the ground up, and upon retirement, she leaves the company to her employees, not to her son. What does that decision tell us about Anna's psychology and about the development of the human brain over a lifetime? Explores the emotional and neurological elements of learning, explaining how the brain processes and stores experiences and prepares for future decision-making. Employing real-to-life dramatizations, Anna's journey from innocent teenager to philosophical retiree--and the changes that take place in her cortex, hippocampus, and neural synapses as she faces and overcomes challenges--are all depicted. In addition, several influential brain experiments from the past decade are described.

    Go into any grocery store and cameras may be watching you. These cameras are not looking for thieves, they’re looking for shoppers. The cameras are focused on the tops of peoples’ heads (so it’s anonymous), but they don’t have to see faces to track which store aisles get the most traffic and how long consumers spend looking over products. With support from the National Science Foundation, computer scientist and CEO of VideoMining Rajeev Sharma and his team have designed software that automatically generates statistics about in-store shopping behavior. These statistics can provide valuable insights for supporting critical decisions in store layout design, merchandising, marketing, and customer service. Sharma’s team has developed similar technology to help caregivers monitor the elderly.

    A shark attack survivor now knows what it feels like to be part bionic man. 23-year-old amputee Craig Hutto has volunteered to help test a state-of-the-art prosthetic leg with powered knee and ankle joints. With support from the National Science Foundation and continued support from the National Institutes of Health, Vanderbilt University mechanical engineer Michael Goldfarb has spent several years developing the leg, which operates with special sensors, an electric motor, a battery, and computer technology. Sensors monitor the user's motion and microprocessors figure out what the person is trying to do. Goldfarb says the powered leg reduces the lag time between a real leg and a prosthetic one. Hutto confirms that the powered prosthetic is much better at anticipating his next move.

    Meet Boss – the car that can drive itself. Boss is the invention of Carnegie Mellon researcher Raj Rajkumar and his team. It has 18 sensors, including a three dimensional laser and onboard computers that connect to GPS and mapping software. When it comes to knowing the rules of the road, Boss rarely makes a mistake. With support from the National Science Foundation, it was built for a Department of Defense competition called the DARPA Urban Challenge. Boss negotiated the roads, including traffic, and was the hands down winner in 2007.

    Engineers are motivated to improve our quality of life, and they typically develop new products to achieve this goal. They use several steps in developing new products: design phase, testing phase, and production and maintenance phase. During the design phase, engineers specify the functional requirements of the product. They also produce a prototype to evaluate its overall effectiveness. They also consider cost, reliability, and safety. During the last two phases, engineers determine if any failures of the components are likely and where they occur. In these processes, engineers use computers to create designs, analyze functionality, and simulate how a machine, structure, or system operates.
