    Scientist William Rowan is renowned for his research on the dark-eyed junco. Before Rowan, it was unknown what environmental cues animals used to time the seasonal changes in their biology. Through a groundbreaking experiment with the junco, Rowan discovered the physiological reaction of organisms to the length of day or night. Shot as an historical re-enactment, this segment provides a glimpse into the history and human dimensions of scientific research and reveals one of the first studies that made juncos well-known to biologists.     Researchers at New York University are tackling one of the major challenges in agriculture. They are trying to raise healthy plants while minimizing the use of fertilizer and the leaching of fertilizer chemicals into the environment. A team led by scientist Gloria Coruzzi and computer scientist Dennis Shasha is using the latest tools to develop new plant varieties that don't need as much nitrogen to grow. The researchers are also investigating which of the plant's genes control fertilizer uptake. Part of the "Science Nation" series.

    Climb aboard the Cyclops, a microscopic research vessel, and investigate an amazing hidden world on which all living things depend. The Cyclops houses a team of scientists known as the Micronauts and guides them through their discoveries of biological classification, diversity, and ecology. In this episode, the Cyclops crashes into the bottom of the pond and discovers an ooze populated by bacteria. After gathering some, the Micronauts begin to investigate the chemical method the bacteria uses to decompose organic material. In the end, the bacterial also helps the crew escape the bottom of the pond so they can continue to explore. Part 5 of the Microscopic Monsters Series.

    In 1977, scientists discovered a diverse community of organisms inhabiting the deep-sea hydrothermal vents of the Pacific Ocean. The sources of energy in these ecosystems are hydrogen sulfide and other inorganic chemicals that are abundant in the water that rises from the vents. Scientists discovered that some animals living near hydrothermal vents, such as the giant tube worm, have a symbiotic relationship with species of bacteria, which allows these animals to survive deep in the ocean. Part of the "I Contain Multitudes" series.

    The rock pocket mouse is a living example of Darwin's process of natural selection. Not only is evolution happening right now everywhere around us, but adaptive changes can occur in a population with remarkable speed. This speed is essential if you're a desert mouse living in an environment where a volcanic eruption can reverse selective pressure in nearly an instant. Features Dr. Michael Nachman, whose work in the field and in the lab has quantified the selective pressure of predators and identified the genes involved in adaptation. From ecosystem to molecules, pocket mice show the viewers how random changes in the genome can take many paths to the same adaptation-a colored coat that hides them from predators.

    In the Rosebud River valley, an hour east of Calgary, the water in many homes can be lit on fire. Everyone agrees there's gas in the water. Few agree on why. At Fiona Lauridsen's farm, just outside the hamlet of Rosebud, showering has become a dangerous activity. Fiona and her family developed skin burns from simply taking a shower and Fiona claims that EnCana, Canada's largest natural gas company is responsible. She claims that EnCana has contaminated the aquifer by drilling (fracking) for coal bed methane, a new source of natural gas extraction that often uses chemicals for drilling. Yet in the hamlet, where the Rosebud Theatre is a popular tourist attraction and graciously sponsored by EnCana, most residents refuse to even talk about burning water, for fear of harming the tourist industry.
