New research led by scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, suggests that the shape of some animals' pupils could reveal whether one is hunter or hunted. An analysis of 214 species of land animals shows that a creature's ecological niche is a strong predictor of pupil shape. Species with pupils that are vertical slits are more likely to be ambush predators that are active both day and night. In contrast, those with horizontally elongated pupils are extremely likely to be plant-eating prey species with eyes on the sides of their heads.
An environmental scientist who provides clean water to the city of Philadelphia explains how this water is used in homes, parks, and swimming pools and to fight fires. Shows that river water from rain and farm runoff is dirty and needs to be purified before people can use it. Visits the Fairmount Water Works and explains how water is brought to such plants, purified, and sent on to homes and factories. Engineers are joining forces with designers, scientists, and doctors at Drexel University to produce new biomedical textiles, and the resulting smart clothes are not only fashionably functional, but could also be life savers. With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), electrical and computer engineer Kapil Dandekar, industrial and fashion designer Genevieve Dion, and OB-GYN Owen Montgomery are incorporating RFID technology into their “belly bands” for women with high-risk pregnancies. Gabriela, Manuel and Leonardo are three friends who accidentally start a rocket that takes them to space. Their journey through space takes them to different planets and strange worlds. Throughout their journey, they have the help of Maqui, an on-board computer. Maqui helps them learn about the universe. After a mechanical problem, the kids land on planet where strange beings like to play athletic games. The three friends join in and teach the beings soccer. As they start playing, Gabi and Leo have trouble breathing. Manuel consults with Maqui and discovers that the planet’s atmosphere has less oxygen than Earth.

At first, the back room of plant physiologist Edgar Spalding's lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison might be mistaken for an alien space ship set straight out of a Hollywood movie. It's a room bathed in low-red light with camera lenses pointing at strange looking entities encased in Petri dishes. A closer inspection reveals the Petri dishes contain nothing alien at all, but rather very down-to-earth corn seedlings. They're grown in red light for optimal growth. They're just one of the plants featured in thousands of time-lapse movies Spalding has created over the past five years. The goal is to figure out how to grow crops optimally.

Many interpreters, teachers, and students are unfamiliar with specialized sign vocabulary because the concepts occur infrequently in daily communication. In this video a Deaf professional signs vocabulary related to his field of expertise. The signs being demonstrated are commonly accepted by the Deaf community, but may not be the only sign for a specific word. Signs often vary across the country, so viewers are encouraged to confirm that signs used in this video are those used in their area/region of the country.
