    British naturalists Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace both set out on epic adventures to study various species and their development. They gathered evidence on the variation among individual members of a species, the relationships among species, and the patterns of geographic distribution across many species. Based on such evidence, they independently came to the same revolutionary conclusions: species change over time by means of natural selection, and species descend from other species.

    An electric eel can generate enough current to stun its prey. Johns Hopkins University neuroethologist Eric Fortune traveled to Ecuador to study electric knifefish in their native habitat. Back at Johns Hopkins University, research collaborator mechanical engineer Noah Cowan and the rest of the team use Fortune's field data to help with their observations and experiments in the lab. With support from the National Science Foundation, they are studying the knifefish to learn more about how the brains of animals work to control their behavior.

    Go into any grocery store and cameras may be watching you. These cameras are not looking for thieves, they’re looking for shoppers. The cameras are focused on the tops of peoples’ heads (so it’s anonymous), but they don’t have to see faces to track which store aisles get the most traffic and how long consumers spend looking over products. With support from the National Science Foundation, computer scientist and CEO of VideoMining Rajeev Sharma and his team have designed software that automatically generates statistics about in-store shopping behavior. These statistics can provide valuable insights for supporting critical decisions in store layout design, merchandising, marketing, and customer service. Sharma’s team has developed similar technology to help caregivers monitor the elderly.

    Chemistry is the science of interacting particles and the various states of matter. Developing a better understanding of the atomic model through experiments with gases, scientists discovered the Ideal Gas Law, developed phase diagrams, and learned about the properties of supercritical fluids.     Copying what others do is a familiar human trait. With support from the National Science Foundation, primatologist Marietta Dindo is researching how this copycat trait is shared by our primate cousins, specifically orangutans at Zoo Atlanta. When Dindo offered a novel way to open a box to get a snack, orangutans copied the behavior almost 100% of the time, and then passed it onto the others. This is how traditions are adopted among human populations. Dindo's study provides evidence that this copycat behavior runs deep within the primate family tree.

    The goal of this research is to determine the mechanisms underlying predatory and defensive behavior guided by an extraordinarily novel sensor in snakes. Pit vipers, pythons and boas possess special organs that form images in the brain of the thermal environment, much like vision occurs in the human brain. Thus, these snakes see heat, and this amazing system is the most sensitive infrared detector on Earth, natural or artificial. A better understanding of infrared-based thermal imaging in snakes is important not only for understanding complex behavior in these highly efficient predators, but also for understanding the evolution of imaging sensors and the behaviors they support in other animals including people.
