    Mobile computing is accelerating beyond the smartphone era. Today, people wear smart glasses, smart watches, and fitness devices, and they carry smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Computer scientist Xia Zhou is working to make sure there are no traffic jams with the increased demand. With support from the National Science Foundation, Zhou and her team at Dartmouth College are developing ways to encode and transmit all that data faster and more securely.     University of Chicago scientists are collaborating with researchers at the Argonne National Laboratory to build a wide-ranging urban sensing project in Chicago known as the Array of Things (AoT). A network of 500 computer nodes gather data on various livability factors from all over Chicago. These factors include climate, weather, air quality, noise levels, and traffic. The data is gathered in real time and helps individuals understand the complexities of city dynamics. Part of the “Science Nation” series.

    What is a thundersnow storm? Most snow storms form when warm air moves into an area in the winter and rising warm air condenses to form snow. If the warm air rises very quickly, the condensing moisture collides with existing particles in the cloud causing electrically charged areas. When a cloud has charged areas, lightning can result. The accompanying sound is why scientists call these thundersnow storms.
