Throughout their journey, they have the help of Maqui, an on-board computer. Maqui helps them learn about the universe. The kids examine old maps to be able to find where they are, but the maps are useless. Then Maqui suggests that they should study the constellations and explains to them that ancient civilizations used the sky and the stars as guides. Soon they arrive to a planet where the inhabitants also look for shapes formed by stars.

These objects now are seen at great cosmic distances, with most of their light stretched out to millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths by the expansion of the universe. ALMA provides the unprecedented ability to study the processes of star and planet formation.

While Earth's weather reports center on precipitation, temperature, wind direction, and humidity, space weather forecasts attempt to predict activity that occurs on the sun. Scientists also study how the weather on the sun will affect Earth. At the University of Michigan a team studies solar storms as they form and then barrel off the sun. Sometimes these storms hit the Earth with damaging force. Space weather has the potential to interfere with everything from satellite communications to electrical power. This team is aiming for a five-day forecast capability to give government, private industry, satellite operators, and power grid companies more time to take necessary action to protect critical infrastructure. Part of the "Science Nation."
With support from the National Science Foundation, astronomers Marc Buie and John Keller are involving citizen scientists from throughout the western United States to participate in the Research and Education Cooperative Occultation Network (RECON). The project has provided telescope equipment and training to 14 small western U.S. communities north and south of Reno, Nevada, where night skies are clear and dark. When RECON students look out at the night sky, they look way out to the Kuiper Belt, a ring of icy debris that litters the Solar System out beyond Neptune. The network is looking to determine the sizes of Kuiper Belt objects as they pass in front of distant stars. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”
Gravity rules the life cycle of stars. During the Red Giant dying stage in the life of an average size star, its outer layers are blown off in vast clouds of dust and gas called "nebulae" that contain hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. Gravity crushes the remaining atoms into a remnant core called a white dwarf. The gravity of giant stars-10 to 20 times larger than average-will, at the end of their life in a supernova explosion, crush together even mutually repulsive protons and electrons, leaving a remnant rotating core of neutrons (i.e., a pulsar). Also explains how stars 20 to 100 times average size collapse into a core so dense that its gravity doesn't even allow light to escape (i.e., a black hole).
With the retirement of NASAs space shuttle fleet in 2011, the role of getting people, satellites and other instruments into space falls to private companies. As of June 2011, there have been only 523 people to reach the 100 kilometer mark (considered human spaceflight), and only 24 have traveled beyond low Earth orbit. It is projected that within ten years, the number of people who will have flown into space will increase by about 600 percent due to the increasing market of suborbital spaceflight and the possibility of private citizens utilizing space flight. Students will explore suborbital and orbital spaceflight and the requirements necessary for vehicles to achieve these journeys. They also go behind the scenes of many of the private companies involved in taking on the tasks to travel to low Earth orbit and beyond and uncover some of the technology used to accomplish these goals.
