    For nearly a decade, with support from the National Science Foundation, Doppler on Wheels (DOW) has been doing its best work in dangerous weather to gather scientific data about wind, rain, and snow. Meteorologist Josh Wurman and his team at the Center for Severe Weather Research in Boulder, Colorado coordinate a fleet of storm-chasing vehicles from a compact control room inside one of the DOW trucks. From thunderstorms to blizzards, hurricanes to tornadoes, DOW is providing extensive and detailed information that may ultimately improve warning systems and weather prediction. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”

    With support from the National Science Foundation, computer scientist Manuela Veloso and her team at Carnegie Mellon University are developing CoBots, autonomous indoor service robots to interact with people and provide help. CoBots can transport objects, deliver messages, and escort people to places. They are able to plan their paths and smoothly navigate autonomously.

    Organics are carbon-based molecules and key ingredients to life. Scientists want to know if organics can be found on Mars. However, finding organics is difficult because they easily break down when exposed to harsh things like extreme radiation and chemical oxidants.     For centuries, land travel was restricted to how fast and far humans or animals could walk. In the 19th century, the invention of the bicycle transferred human energy to a set of wheels. During the Industrial Revolution, the invention of the steam engine led to the railroad, a change in transportation that created the tourist industry. In the early 20th century, the invention of the automobile forever changed how humans travel, and with the assembly line, Henry Ford forever changed how goods are manufactured.

    An early exploration (2015) into how to make a sim accessible has taken place for Forces and Motion Basics. It has working keyboard navigation and auditory descriptions for the 'Net Force' screen when the screen reader is in 'Forms' mode. We are working on updating the content so that it can be read by the screen reader in any mode. Notes for the main interaction: Press 'Enter' or 'Spacebar' to enter a group of pullers. Once in the group, use 'Arrow' keys to choose which puller you wish to select. Press 'Enter' or 'Spacebar' to select puller and move to knot selection. Use 'Arrow' keys to choose between different knots. Press 'Escape' to leave a group of pullers or knots, 'Tab' to leave group and go to next element. This prototype has been tested with NVDA and Firefox.
