    With today's high fuel costs, it is time to start looking beyond petroleum and into renewable resources to power vehicles. Ethanol is a clean-burning fuel derived from plants, primarily corn. It is combined with gasoline to produce a cleaner fuel that doesn't emit as many greenhouse gases as pure gasoline. Pure ethanol has not yet been approved to fuel vehicles, but it is the fuel of choice for racecars. By mixing gasoline with ethanol, fuel supply can be extended. Explores the production of ethanol and highlights the importance it holds in the "green power" movement.

    For nearly a decade, with support from the National Science Foundation, Doppler on Wheels (DOW) has been doing its best work in dangerous weather to gather scientific data about wind, rain, and snow. Meteorologist Josh Wurman and his team at the Center for Severe Weather Research in Boulder, Colorado coordinate a fleet of storm-chasing vehicles from a compact control room inside one of the DOW trucks. From thunderstorms to blizzards, hurricanes to tornadoes, DOW is providing extensive and detailed information that may ultimately improve warning systems and weather prediction. While there, she meets a young Ethiopian woman, Zinet, who comes from a poor family of 12, but has found the courage to break free from long-held cultural barriers holding back women. Features a broader discussion of the solutions to overpopulation in both the developed and developing world.

    With the retirement of NASAs space shuttle fleet in 2011, the role of getting people, satellites and other instruments into space falls to private companies. As of June 2011, there have been only 523 people to reach the 100 kilometer mark (considered human spaceflight), and only 24 have traveled beyond low Earth orbit. It is projected that within ten years, the number of people who will have flown into space will increase by about 600 percent due to the increasing market of suborbital spaceflight and the possibility of private citizens utilizing space flight. Students will explore suborbital and orbital spaceflight and the requirements necessary for vehicles to achieve these journeys. They also go behind the scenes of many of the private companies involved in taking on the tasks to travel to low Earth orbit and beyond and uncover some of the technology used to accomplish these goals.
