    University of Chicago scientists are collaborating with researchers at the Argonne National Laboratory to build a wide-ranging urban sensing project in Chicago known as the Array of Things (AoT). A network of 500 computer nodes gather data on various livability factors from all over Chicago. These factors include climate, weather, air quality, noise levels, and traffic. The data is gathered in real time and helps individuals understand the complexities of city dynamics. Part of the “Science Nation” series.

    These city kids from Boston may not look like conventional farmers, but they’re spending part of their summer getting their hands dirty. They’re learning how to build solar-powered hydroponic systems that grow organic vegetables without soil. With support from the National Science Foundation, Boston College educator Mike Barnett and his team developed the Urban Hydrofarmers Project to engage students in math and science through hydroponic farming and green energy technology. And, because the teens sell what they grow at farmers’ markets, the students get to experience green entrepreneurship. Barnett and his team have also partnered with the STEM Garden Institute to bring hydroponic farming into classrooms throughout the U.S. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”

    In contrast to the peaceful wildlands featured in the prior segments, the urban campus of the University of California-San Diego (UCSD) seems like an unlikely place to find field biologists studying juncos. But in the early 1980s, some juncos decided to make this atypical urban and coastal habitat their year-round home. Since then, scientists have documented a remarkable array of changes in the physical traits, behaviors, and physiology of the colonist population of juncos at UCSD when compared to juncos from the nearby native range. Studies troubling developments in marine, arctic, wetland, and urban environments while highlighting research opportunities that may help prevent future catastrophes.     Fieldwork is a critical part of geography, and involves a range of techniques. Two young commandos are on a fieldwork mission to research and report on the human impact in two geographical regions: one urban and one within a national park. Along the way they learn about preparation, collecting primary and secondary data, equipment, note taking, photographic recording, surveying and interviewing, and presenting findings. They also talk to park rangers who work in both areas and ultimately come to understand the importance of accurate, well-prepared fieldwork.

    Already parts of the world suffer from lack of water, and with increasing demand it's expected to get worse. To better understand and predict drought, thirty universities are collaborating in a multidisciplinary effort called the Shale Hills Project. Among the studies, is field research following the life cycle of water along the Susquehanna River Basin. With support from the National Science Foundation, civil engineer Chris Duffy and his team at Penn State are tracking several aspects of rainfall to better understand the relationship between the flow of water, drought prone areas, and urban populations.

    Meet Boss – the car that can drive itself. Boss is the invention of Carnegie Mellon researcher Raj Rajkumar and his team. It has 18 sensors, including a three dimensional laser and onboard computers that connect to GPS and mapping software. When it comes to knowing the rules of the road, Boss rarely makes a mistake. With support from the National Science Foundation, it was built for a Department of Defense competition called the DARPA Urban Challenge. Boss negotiated the roads, including traffic, and was the hands down winner in 2007.
