    The project is called VORTEX2. For five weeks in the spring of 2009, and again in spring 2010, 100 researchers and scientists from 16 universities deployed about 40 vehicles armed with high tech equipment to measure and probe tornadoes and tornado development.

    David Ray never turns his back on his research, and with good reason. Ray and his team study alligators, crocodiles, and bats. With support from the National Science Foundation, this multidisciplinary team from several universities is mapping crocodile and alligator genomes. Reptiles resembling these have existed for around 80 million years and they are among the first reptiles to have their DNA sequenced. The research will expand knowledge beyond crocodilians to other reptiles, birds, and even dinosaurs.

    The Center for Advanced Forestry Systems is using forestry science and collaborations among universities, industry, and the government to make commercially grown forests more productive and sustainable. With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), research teams at Virginia Tech, North Carolina State University, and the University of Washington have teamed up through the center to study how new slow-release fertilizers could improve growth and not destroy waterways. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”

    Already parts of the world suffer from lack of water, and with increasing demand it's expected to get worse. To better understand and predict drought, thirty universities are collaborating in a multidisciplinary effort called the Shale Hills Project. Among the studies, is field research following the life cycle of water along the Susquehanna River Basin. With support from the National Science Foundation, civil engineer Chris Duffy and his team at Penn State are tracking several aspects of rainfall to better understand the relationship between the flow of water, drought prone areas, and urban populations.

    The species of Goby fish, Sicyopterus stimpsoni, also known as the inching climber, thrives in the waters off Hawaii. To reach the safe haven of its freshwater spawning area, this Goby must scale a waterfall, or at least the rock behind it, using suction cups on its body. With support from the National Science Foundation, scientists at St. Cloud and Clemson Universities study these extraordinary fish to better understand how they’ve adapted and evolved in order to achieve such vertical feats. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”
