Focuses on comets, those mostly unpredictable, wandering objects in the solar system. Uses time-lapse images while explaining a comet's tail and the meteors, or "falling stars," associated with it. Mentions Halley's and Hale-Bopp comets and international efforts to see these bodies more closely. Contains actual pictures of comets photographed by space probes.

Satellite footage, telescopic photos, and animation are used to teach students about the many aspects of the solar system. Viewers are introduced to ancient astronomers, telescopes, observatories, and space exploration. Students will discover facts about planets, orbits, gravity, revolution, and rotation. The program also features discussions of the sun, comets, asteroids, and meteors. Part of the Real World Science series.
A total eclipse of the sun is the greatest spectacle in our solar system. Gives an in-depth explanation as time-lapse images capture the full impact of this event. Begins with a discussion of lunar eclipses before moving on to examine auroras. Explores the causes of auroras, and gives examples of two: the Aurora Borealis and the Aurora Australis.
Part of a series that features a wide variety of video footage, photographs, diagrams and colorful, animated graphics and labels. Begins with a simple definition of the term and concludes with a critical thinking question. For this particular video, students will focus on the term solar system. Part of the Science Video Vocab Series.
Discover what happens at the outer edges of the solar system where solar wind interacts with interstellar space. The Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) is a mission to study the boundary between the solar system and interstellar space. It collects data that shows the global structure and dynamic nature of the heliosphere.
What are asteroids? Where are they? Are they dangerous to us? Explores this space body, its place in the solar system, and its potential threat to life on Earth. Discusses the LINEAR Project, which identifies and maps asteroids. Notes that meteorites are pieces of asteroids, and shows where both have hit Earth.
Examines Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun. Uses photography from the Mariner fly-bys and animation to show the planet's surface features. Describes its characteristics, length of day vs. length of year, its two sunrises, and its orbit. Time-lapse images record Mercury passing across the Sun, an event that occurs only 13 times a century!
Astronomers are beginning to locate thousands of planets that exist outside of the solar system. Scientists provide a behind-the-scenes look at the simple technique that astronomers are using to discover these curious new planets. Part of the "Science Out Loud" series.
Our Sun is a nuclear reactor converting hydrogen to helium continuously. X-ray and telescopic images reveal the Sun's photosphere and chromosphere, sun spots, solar flares and winds, and prominences. Describes each and its impact on Earth. Covers some of the Sun's mysteries, and projects what will eventually happen to our closest star.
In 1977, Voyagers I and II left Earth for deep space exploration and a close-up view of the edges of our solar system. Reveals how the space shuttles used the gravitational fields from surrounding planets to slingshot themselves through the outer planets. Voyager II's graphics and real pictures of Neptune and Uranus help explain their features, axis, rings and moons, and magnetic fields. Also notes some peculiar facts about each.
The sun's powerful, warm rays light up the sky with brilliant color and heat. The changing cycles of the sun can affect the earth and its living organisms. The sun is similar to a living organism-just as humans are born, grow older, and die, so too will the sun. When this happens, the rest of the solar system will have no future.
Scientists believe that Saturn, the second largest planet, would float in water if a glass were big enough. Uses computer graphics to note its features and those of its seven rings. Discusses Titan, its largest moon, and the Cassini probe, which examines it. Notes Saturn is a gas giant, has a 30-year orbit, and that astronomers create theories about this planet based on limited facts.
With support from the National Science Foundation, astronomers Marc Buie and John Keller are involving citizen scientists from throughout the western United States to participate in the Research and Education Cooperative Occultation Network (RECON). The project has provided telescope equipment and training to 14 small western U.S. communities north and south of Reno, Nevada, where night skies are clear and dark. When RECON students look out at the night sky, they look way out to the Kuiper Belt, a ring of icy debris that litters the Solar System out beyond Neptune. The network is looking to determine the sizes of Kuiper Belt objects as they pass in front of distant stars. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”
When the power mysteriously goes out at the new Radopolis skate park, the CyberSquad and Digit must find a way to turn it back on before a nighttime skateboarding extravaganza. Part of the "Cyberchase" series.
Our solar system is a fascinating place. Colorful images illustrate the major planets and their unique characteristics. Special attention is paid to what makes Earth unique in the solar system.
The planets closest to the sun, often referred to as the inner planets, are the focus of this program. Colorful animations, along with images captured by space probes, illustrate the characteristics of Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. The fundamental structure of the solar system and the process by which planets revolve around the sun are discussed. Special attention is given to the features that make Earth unique in the solar system. Important terminology includes: sun, orbit, revolve, gravity, inertia, rotation, axis, atmosphere, and spacecraft.
Students explore the force of gravity. This video also discusses the role of gravity in the solar system. Concepts and terminology include force, gravity, attraction, orbits, and tides.
Examines the similarities and differences between Mars and Earth. Comments on the size, color, atmosphere, and temperature of Mars. Includes footage from recent missions to Mars and speculates on possible manned space flights to the Red Planet.
Introduces students to our planet Earth and its place in the solar system. Explains that Earth's unique position makes it conducive to life. Also explains the basics of earth science, including the water cycle, weather, and continents. Short review.
