Tony Ro, a neuroscientist at The City College of New York, is artificially recreating a condition called blindsight in his lab. Blindsight is a condition that some patients experience after having damage to the primary visual cortex in the back of their brains. What happens in these patients is they go cortically blind, yet they can still discriminate visual information. With support from the National Science Foundation, Ro is developing a clearer picture of how other parts of the brain, besides the visual cortex, respond to visual stimuli. He says understanding and mapping those alternative pathways might be the key to new rehabilitative therapies.

At first glance, the bone-dry landscape of the Atacama Desert in Chile might seem inhospitable. But, it’s prime real estate for astronomers. This desert is now home to the largest ground-based radio telescope in the world called the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array or “ALMA for short. The goal of this research is to determine the mechanisms underlying predatory and defensive behavior guided by an extraordinarily novel sensor in snakes. Pit vipers, pythons and boas possess special organs that form images in the brain of the thermal environment, much like vision occurs in the human brain. Thus, these snakes see heat, and this amazing system is the most sensitive infrared detector on Earth, natural or artificial. A better understanding of infrared-based thermal imaging in snakes is important not only for understanding complex behavior in these highly efficient predators, but also for understanding the evolution of imaging sensors and the behaviors they support in other animals including people. Under them, a rainbow of colors is dancing in the waves. Moko and Mei-Lei think that the fish must be organizing a party and decide to dive in. Bit by bit the sun is rising and day is breaking. The two friends return to the village, overjoyed at the wonders of the ocean.

Moko, who hasn't seen the ocean in a long time, is dreaming of seeing it again, but realizes that it will be awhile before they cross this mountain and see the sea. But then, they see boats and barges. Why would there be boats on a mountain? An old man comes to them and tells them that if it is the ocean one seeks, sometimes it can be found even on a mountain. Curious, Moko and Totemie walk on into the forest and discover what can only be an ocean atop the mountain, only here they don't say ocean or sea, but rather they call it a lake. Moko believes that this lake is here in order to console the people who cannot live beside the ocean.
