Gravity rules the life cycle of stars. During the Red Giant dying stage in the life of an average size star, its outer layers are blown off in vast clouds of dust and gas called "nebulae" that contain hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. Gravity crushes the remaining atoms into a remnant core called a white dwarf. The gravity of giant stars-10 to 20 times larger than average-will, at the end of their life in a supernova explosion, crush together even mutually repulsive protons and electrons, leaving a remnant rotating core of neutrons (i.e., a pulsar). Also explains how stars 20 to 100 times average size collapse into a core so dense that its gravity doesn't even allow light to escape (i.e., a black hole).

In the 1950's, the Soviets decide to turn the vast desert steppes of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan into fields of cotton and wheat. They diverted some of the rivers that feed the lake to irrigate the new crops. This depleted the Aral Sea, and in 1987, the level of the water falls so low that the sea splits into two bodies of water. It splits again in 2002. Researchers from NOAA's National Marine Mammal Lab track the migrating fur seals to understand where they feed in winter months and what marine resources they depend on for survival. It's early November and the team affixes a satellite transmitter to an adult female. They won't see her back on the Pribilof Islands until next July, and they hope the tag will stay on throughout winter and spring. Back at their offices in Seattle, the researchers begin tracking tagged animals via satellites.
