Dr. Riki Ott is a whistle blower who predicted the Exxon Valdez oil spill before it happened. She is also a toxicologist, author, and activist who spent time organizing the Gulf Coast communities in response to the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster. Various citizen groups have followed Dr. Ott's example to change and strengthen efforts to curb oil pollution of America's lands, rivers, and coastal waters.

Some of the efforts include taxonomy (cataloging species), managed retreat (letting nature retake areas), saving seeds, and propagating endangered plants. Man's efforts toward destruction and development must be balanced with sustainability.
The Boreal Forest in Northern Canada is the bird nursery for North and South America. The birds and ducks that migrate to the forest are in danger from logging and mining in the area. Conservationists have seen numbers decline over the years, and they have established the Boreal Songbird Initiative to track the health and numbers of the birds’ migrations. The Atacama large Millimeter/Sub-millimeter Array, or ALMA, is a vast array of radio telescopes and the most powerful observatory of its kind. ALMA is stationed in the Atacama Desert of Chile which is one of the world’s best sites for observational astronomy because of the high altitude, nearly non-existent cloud cover, dry air and lack of light pollution and radio interference due to the small populations. ALMA peers into previously hidden regions of space with unprecedented sharpness and sensitivity.

With funding from the National Science Foundation, Biologist Vance Vredenburg studies the disease and shares his research with scientists who are dealing with this crisis on every continent where amphibians live.
Using only gasoline to power cars back in 1905 was cheaper and easier, so the hybrid car was forgotten-until recently. The modern hybrid car has two distinct power sources working together to make it run: gas and electric power. Since the fuel widely used now is a non-renewable resource and becoming increasingly less affordable, the hybrid car is making a comeback. The benefit of the hybrid is that instead of running on gas, it uses non-polluting electric power when possible. Also, it helps cut pollution and saves drivers money at the gas pump.

Mobile computing is accelerating beyond the smartphone era. Today, people wear smart glasses, smart watches, and fitness devices, and they carry smartphones, tablets, and laptops. In a decade, the very same people are likely to wear or carry tens of wireless devices and interact with the Internet and computing infrastructure in markedly different ways. Computer scientist Xia Zhou is working to make sure there are no traffic jams with the increased demand. With support from the National Science Foundation, Zhou and her team at Dartmouth College are developing ways to encode and transmit all that data faster and more securely.
