    As shown on the History Channel. The Grand Canyon is nearly 300 miles long and over a mile deep. You could stack four Empire State buildings one on top of the other, and they still wouldn't reach the lip of the Canyon. As vast tectonic plates clash and grind against one another a giant plateau has been pushed up over a mile in the air. The Colorado River, flowing from high in the Rockies and carrying a thick load of sediment, has carved the canyon in the rising plateau.

    The rim of the Pacific Basin is one of the most geologically active places on Earth, and scientists have nicknamed the area "The Ring of Fire."     Hawaii's Kilauea volcano is one of the best places on Earth to study processes within basaltic volcanoes. Its high eruption frequency, easy access to lavas, and distinct geologic setting far from plate boundaries or continents allow researchers to address fundamental problems related to active volcanoes. Another constant at Kilauea, besides the flowing lava, has been University of Hawaii geologist Mike Garcia. With support from the National Science Foundation, Garcia has been leading studies of Kilauea for a generation, adding to the extensive knowledge base on this volcano. Two of the primary goals are to determine what has triggered Kilauea’s effusive, explosive cycles over the last 2200 years and when long eruptions, such as the current one, will stop.     Volcanoes are a part of the earth, and they have intrigued people for hundreds of years. Scientists study the earth's plates in order to understand the complexity of volcanic activity around the world. They also study different types of lava, rocks, and the gases that have dissolved into rocks. In the past, studying volcanic activity was extremely dangerous for scientists. Now they have access to tools, such as global positioning systems and seismometers, to help in predicting volcanic activity.

    An important part of the conservation effort in Gorongosa National Park is to identify the species living in the park to ensure their protection and monitor their recovery. Every year, teams of scientists conduct biodiversity surveys in different areas of the park. Piotr Naskrecki leads a survey project in a particularly remote area, the limestone gorges of the Cheringoma Plateau, to study the bat population.

    Understanding what happens at the epicenter of an earthquake, as the tectonic plates beneath the earth shift and the earth shakes, could help better predict when and where the next big one will hit. For the past six years scientists from a number of institutions have joined in a project called San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth, or SAFOD. They have drilled to the core of the San Andreas Fault, near Parkfield California, down to a specific area along the fault known to experience a number of small earthquakes every year. By retrieving and studying core rock samples from that site, geologists Chris Marone and Brett Carpenter and hydrogeologist Demian Saffer are getting a better understanding of the types of rocks involved in major quakes, versus the rocks present at more forgiving ones.

    The first in a series of five documentaries plots the course of the river, from its source to its delta. In a succession of spectacular images we see the extraordinary geographical route that the Mekong takes, from the Tibetan plateau, down the mountains of the Yunnan Province in China, then through the tropical valleys and virgin forests of Burma, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand before reaching the green plains of Vietnam. In the tropical forest, nature abounds with wild animal species, rare plants and flowers. In Laos', whole villages still pray to the Gods of Trees while in Thailand a hunter shows how the hunting of Asian elephants for preservation, now forbidden, was practiced.
