    Teachers often say to students, “Put your thinking caps on,” and one day, students might just do that for real. Vanderbilt University psychologist Geoffrey Woodman says that’s because scientists are being equipped with more and more tools they can use to better understand the brain, and now, they can even eavesdrop on individual neurons. Initial support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) allowed Woodman and his team at the Vanderbilt University Visual Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory to study memory and perception. Then, the researchers tested their theory that electrical stimulation of the medial frontal cortex can boost learning and improve decision-making. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”

    What does a mirror tell us about light? Illustrates 11 computer-animated video units for one aspect of light's behavior-reflection. Euclid's geometric optics and his findings on the perception of distance and perspective lead to a discussion of the Law of Reflection, linking angle of incidence with angle of reflection, and the concepts of absorption, transmission, and diffuse reflection. Explains the principles involved with plane, concave, and convex mirrors, including vertex, principle axis, center of curvature, radius of curvature, and virtual image.     Most pet owners talk to their animals at one time or another, and some do every day. But, how much do pets actually understand? Is their perception anything like our own? These are the questions that fascinate Irene Pepperberg and she’s looking for answers from the animals themselves, specifically – African Grey Parrots. The Harvard psychology professor is a bit like the character Dr. Doolittle because she’s been talking to parrots for decades. With help from the National Science Foundation, she’s researching how much the birds understand about shapes, numbers, and colors. Her next phase of research involves how the parrots detect optical illusions, and whether they perceive them the way humans do. Her research will also reveal more about how a bird’s vision works.

Explores how recent scientific discoveries have toppled the concept of biological race. Follows a dozen high school students who sequence and compare their own mitochondrial DNA looking for a "race marker," with surprising results. Also looks at the history of racism in the United States, the advent of stereotypes based on physical attributes attributed to races, and somatotypes, with particular reference to African Americans.

    It’s widely believed that the younger one is, the easier it will be for one to learn a new language, and new research is finding that holds true for sign language as well. University of California, San Diego (UCSD), psychologist Rain Bosworth says that by five months old, babies are universal language sponges, attracted to language in their environment, and this includes sign language. With support from the National Science Foundation, Bosworth and her colleagues at the Infant Vision Lab (IVL) have been putting that theory to the test, investigating how deafness affects perception and cognition in babies, and the impact of early exposure to sign language. The team includes Karen Dobkins, director of IVL, So-One Hwang, of UCSD’s Center for Research in Language, and student researchers Adam Stone of Gallaudet University and Hector Borges of UCSD. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”
