For nearly 40 years, Dr. Ellen Ketterson and her research team from Indiana University have been studying juncos in the mountain forests of Virginia. This segment introduces viewers to the junco, the researchers, and the core methods they use to study birds. Set in field, lab, and aviary locations, one landmark study is highlighted in detail: a long-term field experiment investigating the complex effects of the hormone testosterone on behavior, physiology, and evolutionary fitness. • Different math equations and graphs are drawn, with a butterfly as the backdrop.

The monarch butterfly migration is one of nature’s greatest events. This orange-winged wonder travels up to 4,500 km from all over North America to spend the winter hanging from oyamel fir trees in central Mexico’s mountain forests. But how does an animal with a brain the size of a sesame seed navigate to this one special place? Part of the "It's Okay to Be Smart" series.

  • Illustration of trees growing on a mountain. Caption: Some of these forests grow on mountains.

Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, Moko and Mei-Lei are resting in the shade of a tall tree. Mei-Lei is wondering whether Moko will be leaving her and saddened by this thought she walks away. Moko sets off to try to find her in the tropical forest. Droplets of water stream down from the trees like rain. Night falls and Moko can no longer see anything. He decides to wait until morning to go on. The next morning, Mei-Lei has returned and she is smiling because she sees that she must mean a lot to Moko since he came all this way to find her. • A stream flows through a mountainous region. Caption: Canada Coastal Forest. Latitude, 50 degrees North. Longitude, 125 degrees West. Rainfall, 3000 to 5000 millimeters. Winter Temperature, minus 2 degrees Celsius.

Canada's coastal forest is part of an ancient forest system of redwood, spruce, and cedar trees. It is also home to some of the largest aggregations of top predators in North America. The trees of this forest are huge, and forest productivity here rivals even some of the world's biggest tropical rain forests. Part of the "Nature's Microworlds" series.

  • People stand on and around a large pile of cut grass with an unmotorized vehicle next to it. Caption: In China, young Mekong is called Lancang.

The first in a series of five documentaries plots the course of the river, from its source to its delta. In a succession of spectacular images we see the extraordinary geographical route that the Mekong takes, from the Tibetan plateau, down the mountains of the Yunnan Province in China, then through the tropical valleys and virgin forests of Burma, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand before reaching the green plains of Vietnam. In the tropical forest, nature abounds with wild animal species, rare plants and flowers. In Laos', whole villages still pray to the Gods of Trees while in Thailand a hunter shows how the hunting of Asian elephants for preservation, now forbidden, was practiced. • Closely spaced plants growing toward the water's surface. Caption: They grow in dense groupings, much like a forest on land.

Kelp forests can be seen along much of the West Coast of North America. NOAA scientists study kelp forests by visiting the same locations over and over to assess the presence and abundance of a variety of organisms. Monitoring allows marine scientists to determine if the kelp forest is changing over time and to identify the cause of those changes, whether natural or human. Healthy kelp forests maintain the existence of thousands of plants, animals, and fish stocks. All of these require a thriving ocean ecosystem.

  • Illustration of rain falling on a rock. Caption: It is a very slow process that happens over millions of years.

Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, the snow's thaw is drawing to a close and the mountain is shedding its white robe. Alarick and Moko are fishing in one of the mountain's springs and are catching nothing. They ask an old wise man to tell them where there might be fish. He points them towards the road to the "Ancient Mountain." They follow the road the old man told them about and reach a green luxuriant hill covered with fruit trees and streams. They think that this hill--smaller than their mountain, richer and greener--younger and simply hasn't grown up yet. Moko and Alarick explore the natural process of erosion.

  • Illustration of mountains with a raincloud over the valley between them. Caption: Lakes provide not only drinkable water and water to spray crops,

Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, Moko wants to know what lies beyond the forest and decides to go find out. Totemie comes along and after a long walk they find a mountain village. Moko, who hasn't seen the ocean in a long time, is dreaming of seeing it again, but realizes that it will be awhile before they cross this mountain and see the sea. But then, they see boats and barges. Why would there be boats on a mountain? An old man comes to them and tells them that if it is the ocean one seeks, sometimes it can be found even on a mountain. Curious, Moko and Totemie walk on into the forest and discover what can only be an ocean atop the mountain, only here they don't say ocean or sea, but rather they call it a lake. Moko believes that this lake is here in order to console the people who cannot live beside the ocean.

One morning, a terrible sound shakes the village and as they wonder where it is coming from they see a wave of mud streaming down the mountain and threatening to swallow up the village. Moko approaches the wave of mud and pleads with it to keep the village safe. He remembers that Mei Lei knew how to speak to mountains and takes out the stone she gave him and is about to offer it to the mud as Mei Lei had offered hers to the volcano but Totemie stops him and offers her necklace instead. The village is saved and the mudslide flows into the lake. Moko promises himself to one day give Totemie what is dearest to him.
