In January 2014, host Emily Graslie accompanied Curator of Mammals, Bruce Patterson, on a field expedition into the bat caves of Kenya. In this second installment, the researchers collect bats at night. The next morning they release the captured bats and try to record the "sounds" made by the different species. The area of Southern Washington State around the Mount St. Helens Volcano has been nearly devoid of life since the 1980 eruption – making it a biology lab like no other as scientists observe it springing back to life. The regenerating ecosystem offers biologist John Bishop of Washington State University in Vancouver a chance to study what happens as the mountain springs back to life. Bishop and his team are learning that recovery of an ecosystem is unpredictable and fragile, particularly by observing the impact of a small invader species insect from the weevil family.
As shown on the History Channel. Over 20 years ago, Mount St. Helen's--thought to be dormant--shocked America when it exploded. It is an acidic volcano--the magma beneath is full of volatiles making it highly explosive. A new plug has formed in its throat and is rising. When it blows, it will be like uncorking a champagne bottle, releasing pressure below and allowing dissolved gases to escape and explode. The question is, When will it blow again?

They ask an old wise man to tell them where there might be fish. He points them towards the road to the "Ancient Mountain." They follow the road the old man told them about and reach a green luxuriant hill covered with fruit trees and streams. They think that this hill--smaller than their mountain, richer and greener--younger and simply hasn't grown up yet. Moko and Alarick explore the natural process of erosion.

In this episode, Moko wants to know what lies beyond the forest and decides to go find out. Totemie comes along and after a long walk they find a mountain village. Moko, who hasn't seen the ocean in a long time, is dreaming of seeing it again, but realizes that it will be awhile before they cross this mountain and see the sea. But then, they see boats and barges. Why would there be boats on a mountain? An old man comes to them and tells them that if it is the ocean one seeks, sometimes it can be found even on a mountain. Curious, Moko and Totemie walk on into the forest and discover what can only be an ocean atop the mountain, only here they don't say ocean or sea, but rather they call it a lake. Moko believes that this lake is here in order to console the people who cannot live beside the ocean.

In this episode, Moko is woken by the sound of singing coming from the other end of the beach. It is Mei-Lei. As they are walking towards her village, they feel a terrible rumble and see black smoke coming from the mountain. Moko thinks this is his fault, that he has trespassed in the forbidden forest, and wants to apologize. They arrive at the edge of an enormous chasm, a veritable fire pit. To prevent the volcano from erupting, Moko offers it a beautiful seashell, as Mei-Lei's ancestors did. The mountain's rumbling stops and Moko is proud to have learned its language.

One morning, a terrible sound shakes the village and as they wonder where it is coming from they see a wave of mud streaming down the mountain and threatening to swallow up the village. Moko approaches the wave of mud and pleads with it to keep the village safe. He remembers that Mei Lei knew how to speak to mountains and takes out the stone she gave him and is about to offer it to the mud as Mei Lei had offered hers to the volcano but Totemie stops him and offers her necklace instead. The village is saved and the mudslide flows into the lake. Moko promises himself to one day give Totemie what is dearest to him.

A man crosses their path and tells them that only the pure of heart and courageous ever find the end of the deep valley. Filled with courage they set off to find it. Moko plays his flute and the mountains echo leads their way through the canyon's maze.

In this episode, Moko and Alarick are heading back towards the village, their boat filled with fish. They moor their boat and start walking in the direction of the village. As they round the mountain they finally see the rooftops of the approaching village. Moko yells out in joy. Suddenly, a cloud of snow appears to be tumbling down the mountain like a galloping horse. Alarick and Moko take shelter under a large boulder. As the avalanche hits with all of its fury, Alarick pleads with the mountain to forgive Moko for his outburst, and it is once again calm. Moko promises to be quiet from now on and thanks his friend for reasoning with the mountain.
This national monument tells the story of the California’s Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. Established in 1911 by presidential proclamation, Devils Postpile National Monument protects and preserves the Devils Postpile formation, the 101-foot high Rainbow Falls, and pristine mountain scenery. The formation is a rare sight in the geologic world and ranks as one of the world's finest examples of columnar basalt. Its columns tower 60 feet high and display an unusual symmetry.
