  • Rock formations with straight sides rise above rocky red landscape dotted with trees. Spanish captions.

Earth's landscape has a wide variety of physical features referred to as landforms. Characteristics of the major landforms are illustrated with footage from North America, including the Grand Canyon, Interior Plains, and the Rocky Mountains. Important terminology includes plain, relief, interior plain, coastal plain, plateau, mountain, hill, valley, canyon, beach, dune, sea cliff, sea stack, ocean, lake, bay, river, and creek.

  • Tall, snowy, and rocky mountain as seen from below. Caption: Is Everest shrinking or growing?

As shown on the History Channel. It is the tallest and biggest mountain on Earth, as far removed from sea level as it's possible to be--and yet its sedimentary layers contain fossils that were once creatures that lived on the ocean seabed. The Himalayas formed when India smashed into Asia--propelled by plate tectonics. Everest is still rising but its height is limited--extreme erosion counteracts and limits the amount of uplift.

  • Illustration of a few trees as seen through extremely thick snow. Caption: During a blizzard, winds can exceed 40 kilometers per hour.

Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, on that morning, Moko was helping his friend and the other villagers to cut firewood to heat their homes. Snow begins to fall, and Alarick tells Moko that it would be best if they went back inside. But Moko wants to learn the secret of the snow. He heads toward the mountain. At the summit, he sees large trees bending in the wind and clouds of snow swirling around in the sky. As he makes his way back down to the village, the storm blocks his way and he can go no further. Moko begs with the mountain to let him through, promising to tell no one the mountain's secret. The storm calms and Moko returns to the village. When Alarick asks him what he has learned, Moko tells him that the mountain's secret is not one that can be revealed.

  • Teacher outside the magic school bus wearing a rock outfit. Caption: Leave no stone unturned.

The Magic School Bus is an award winning animated children’s television series based on the book series of the same title by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen. It is notable for its use of celebrity talent and being both highly entertaining and educational. To celebrate the founding of Walkerville, Ms. Frizzle's class sculpts a stone likeness of its founding father, Captain Walker. But as they add the finishing touches, the statue tumbles down the mountain. Ms. Frizzle turns the bus into a giant boulder and the kids into rock kids. They bump down the mountain in a desperate attempt to save the statue. By the time they reach the celebration at the base of the mountain, they've been pushed, tossed, sanded, polished, and eroded by water.

  • Illustration of a mountain with snow on the peak starting to melt down one side of the mountain. Caption: Some floods are triggered by mountain snows melting

Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, Moko and Mei-Lei are gathering seashells in between the rocks on the white sand beach to decorate the village's houses. Moko asks Mei-Lei if they can go to other beaches to try to find other shells. Mei-Lei likes the idea and goes to ask a fisherman to take them to another beach on his boat. Just beyond the village Moko sees a vast plain that has been flooded with water. He thinks this must have been the great wave, flooding the field with water so that the rice would grow. This is when Mei-Lei picks up a magnificent seashell and Moko believes that it must surely be a gift from the ocean. Moko and Mei-Lei make their way back home, carrying their gift and happy to have seen wonderful new places. They are certain that the ocean must know an underground passage in which it sends waves every now and then to feed the rivers and the fields.

  • A volcano emits ash and smoke, as seen from a city street. Caption: (narrator) It's the nightmare scenario that everyone fears.

As shown on the History Channel. Mount Vesuvius is the world's most dangerous volcano, and it threatens three million people. It was responsible for the most famous natural disaster of ancient history, the eruption that destroyed the Roman city of Pompeii. And its most recent blast was caught on film in 1944. Today Vesuvius is the most densely populated volcano in the world. Now recent scientific discoveries show that it is capable of an eruption larger than ever before thought possible and that hidden beneath Vesuvius there is a vast magma chamber of boiling hot rock, ready to come out.

  • Illustration of a plate of Earth's crust being pushed beneath a second plate. Caption: (narrator) As the two plates moved towards each other,

As shown on the History Channel. From Alaska to New Mexico, the Rockies are one of the great mountain belts of the world--caused by tectonic forces of the Pacific Plate pushing against the North American continent. They have formed as the earth's continental crust has been shortened under pressure, by around one inch a year. What's more, they are still rising and they are still young in geologic terms: when the dinosaurs roamed the Earth they had not even started to form.

  • Several volcanoes oozing lava and emitting smoke. Caption: They were pushed back by these mountains of fire.

As shown on the History Channel. It is not only a place of natural splendor, but a geologic treasure trove as well. Hidden in the sediments of the rocks in its walls is evidence of the coldest time on our planet--ironic in one of the hottest places on Earth. Death Valley is literally being pulled apart, and the floor is collapsing and is lower than sea level. Here and across much of Nevada is the Basin and Range Province--a series of ridges of mountain ranges that are being pulled apart and the basins between them getting wider and flat as they fill with eroded sediment.

  • Illustration of trees growing on a mountain. Caption: Some of these forests grow on mountains.

Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, Moko and Mei-Lei are resting in the shade of a tall tree. Mei-Lei is wondering whether Moko will be leaving her and saddened by this thought she walks away. Moko sets off to try to find her in the tropical forest. Droplets of water stream down from the trees like rain. Night falls and Moko can no longer see anything. He decides to wait until morning to go on. The next morning, Mei-Lei has returned and she is smiling because she sees that she must mean a lot to Moko since he came all this way to find her. He thinks that the trees have stopped crying now that Mei-Lei is no longer sad.
