There isn't an easy answer to the question: What is the nearest galaxy to the Milky Way? The Andromeda Galaxy is the closest complete galaxy; however, astronomers have found several dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way. Part of the "Ask an Astronomer" series.

Gabriela, Manuel and Leonardo are three friends who accidentally start a rocket that takes them to space. Their journey through space takes them to different planets and strange worlds. Throughout their journey, they have the help of Maqui, an on-board computer. Maqui helps them learn about the universe. The kid’s spaceship is intercepted by an alien called Jusini. He offers to take them to planet Earth, but Manuel doesn’t trust him. The kids fall into a trap after Gabriela and Leonardo don’t listen to Manuel’s advice. While they are trying to escape, they study the Milky Way together with Maqui.
Depicts the different stages in the birth and death of stars, including the sun. There are 100 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy alone, and there are 100 billion galaxies. Provides an overview of radiated energy, which is in all wavelengths; nuclear fusion; and fierce magnetic fields, which create all solar events. Explains that the length of a star's life and how it dies are determined by gravity and how gravity is proportional to size.
Nitrogen is the chemical element with the symbol N and atomic number 7. It is a common element in the universe, estimated at about seventh in total abundance in the Milky Way and the Solar System.

Documents efforts to contact and communicate with potential extraterrestrial life and interstellar space. Attempts to answer the question: Are we alone? Looks at the Drake equation, the standard for anyone seeking to find the number of planets with intelligent life in the Milky Way galaxy. Discusses the pioneering research at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI) based in Mountain View, California.
The Mars One initiative plans to establish a permanent settlement on Mars in 2023 and is looking for future astronauts. No experience necessary. But there is a catch; this trip is one way only. The documentary interviews aspiring astronauts from Germany, America, Brazil, and Belgium as they talk about what motivates them to consider leaving their parents, children, and loved ones behind for a mission they cannot refuse.
Part of the animated "Johan, the Young Scientist" series. Disbelieving that rainbows actually exist, Johan travels to ScienScape seeking clarification from Professor Hoo. Professor Hoo explains to him how rainbows are formed and helps Johan, Ani, and Moki find one that afternoon.
How are rocks formed? Do they change over time? Students explore the world of rocks and minerals. They also learn how to identify common minerals and properties of rocks. Part of the "Way Cool Science" series.
Matter is made up of tiny particles called molecules. Host, Max Orbit, helps students learn all about the different properties, qualities, and characteristics of matter. He also discusses solids, liquids, and gases. Part of the "Way Cool Science" series.
Weather affects everyone's life. This program provides illuminating, live-action examples and explanations of different weather patterns around the world. Students will also learn the layers of the atmosphere and be able to explain the causes and effects of air currents and air pressure. Part of the "Way Cool Science" series.
Deep in the Great Bear Rainforest, against the backdrop of British Columbia’s breathtaking wilderness, a former hunter comes to terms with his past and looks with hope towards the future. Exploring one man’s evolving relationship with the natural world, this documentary tells the compelling story of Robert Moberg, a hunter who ultimately traded his gun for a camera. Anole lizards are highly territorial and typically stick close to their home tree. So, what happens when a team of researchers carries them far away into the forest? Will they find their way back? Dr. Manuel Leal and colleagues designed an experiment to find out. They displaced the lizards from their home territories and then tracked their movements using radio transmitters. Most of the lizards were able to orient themselves and head in the right direction, with some making a beeline back to their original tree in less than 24 hours.
The climate, animals, and plant life vary greatly in different parts of the world. Students explore how wildlife and the environment work together in harmony. They also learn how to identify and locate the seven major biomes found on Earth. Part of the "Way Cool Science" series.
In this program, viewers will travel the world and learn about the diversity of plants throughout the various land regions around the world. Graphics, animation, and live-action footage will assist students in identifying characteristics of various habitats on Earth. Students will learn how plants have adapted to live in polar regions, tundra, desert, grasslands, forests, and salt and freshwater habitats. Part of the "Way Cool Science" series.
What happens to the size and health of ducklings if their mothers have to leave the nests for long periods of time to get food? That’s what Bill Hopkins, a fisheries and wildlife professor, hopes to find out, with support from the National Science Foundation. Hopkins’ research team at Virginia Tech, including wildlife Ph.D. student Sarah DuRant, is studying how environmental factors influence hatchlings, incubation, and overall survival of wild ducks.
To diagnose prostate cancer, urologists John Wei and pathologists, Scott Tomlins, at the University of Michigan Medical Center, use biomarkers, which are biochemical signatures in blood, urine, and tissue that suggest the disease may be present. With support from the National Science Foundation, engineer Brian Denton is working with a multidisciplinary team that includes Wei and Tomlins to develop a quicker and less expensive way to evaluate biomarkers, using computational models. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”
NOVA takes an in-depth look at scientific breakthroughs in reproductive science. Discusses in vitro fertilization (IVF) and examines some of the latest techniques in treating infertility: cytoplasmic transfer, micromanipulation, and egg donation. Presents the challenges and risks of infertility and treatments. Raises ethical questions about the implications of reproductive technology.
Most people see a vegetable when they see a spinach leaf, but in this lab, they see the potential to create heart tissue. Students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute are training to be leaders in bioengineering, and they are thinking outside the box to develop practical, commercially viable technologies that fulfill critical unmet needs. Part of the "Science Nation" series.
If the sun instantly switched off like a light bulb, it would take almost 8 and a half minutes before humans on Earth realized what happened. Light travels at the fastest speed there is, but it still takes almost 500 seconds to get to Earth. This means the sunlight that reaches Earth is old. How is that possible? It is due to the concept of random walks. Part of the “It’s Okay to Be Smart” series.
