After a few relatively mild winters on the northern Gulf coast, cold intolerant black mangroves have started to multiply in salt marshes. Dr. Hughes is conducting an experiment to test whether some mangroves are better adapted to colder climates. Part of the series "In The Grass, On The Reef."

Half a century ago, astronauts got on top of a really big rocket and sent a tiny little capsule on a 384,000 km trip to the moon and back. They were able to do it because a lot of extremely smart and dedicated people pushed engineering and chemistry to the limits. In this episode, host Joe Hanson travels to NASA in Houston to talk to astronaut Don Pettit about the rocket equation. Part of the "It's Okay to Be Smart" series.
With support from the National Science Foundation, aerospace engineer Michael Philen and his team at Virginia Tech are investigating the biomechanics of fish locomotion, in hopes of contributing to the next generation of robotic fish and underwater submersibles. They’re studying how fish use their muscles to swim efficiently and execute underwater maneuvers, such as darting around in perfectly synchronized schools. They’re also developing new smart materials, such as a bioengineered hair that is modeled after the hair cell sensors on the side of fish that allow it to detect minute changes in water flow. Dr. Randall Hughes is conducting an experiment into how well black mangrove propagules from both local and south Florida trees grow in Saint Joseph Bay. Following a harsh winter, she is able to more thoroughly test the survivorship of black mangroves in northern Gulf marshes. Part of the series In "The Grass, On The Reef."
Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, Moko wonders why the moon changes shape so often. Sometimes, when he sees the moon rising in the distance like the sun, he thinks that by walking towards the horizon he could get closer and find out more. That way he could even ask the moon itself. During his long walk towards the ever-receding horizon, Moko watches the moon constantly changing shape. Sometimes it's a crescent like a smile, sometimes a disc of light; sometimes it's white, sometimes yellowish. It travels across the sky but you can't see it moving. One night, Moko decides to watch the moon perform its lovely dance among the stars. He figures he'll never reach the horizon, and in fact maybe the moon just wants to put on a show, to be watched more often.

University of Rochester electrical engineer Mark Bocko has combined his passion for music with his passion for engineering, devising a way to digitally compress music files. Bocko’s team of engineers and musicians at Rochester’s Eastman School of Music are also helping uncover some extraordinarily precise details about just how music is made. With support from the National Science Foundation, they have built a computer model of the clarinet, entirely from real world acoustical measurements taken from human musicians. Measuring such things as how hard the musician is blowing into the instrument and the pressure the musician applies to the reed, they have modeled the way music is made.
After Charles Darwin first visited the island archipelago of Galapagos in 1839, it took him another twenty years to decipher that the scene he'd witnessed was the most perfectly preserved biodiversity on the planet. His theory of evolution, published 150 years ago, pulled back the curtain on a debate that had been simmering for years, and still percolates. Today Darwin would be surprised by the tourist mecca Galapagos has become--200,000 visitors a year, 40,000 permanent residents. The impact on the most unique collection of endemic wildlife in the world has been heavy. Too many people are bringing too many of their ways (and invasive species) from the outside world that are threatening the future of this one-of-a-kind place. On January 14, 2005, the European Space Agency's “Huygens” probe made its descent to the surface of Saturn's hazy moon, Titan. Carried to Saturn by NASA's “Cassini” spacecraft, “Huygens” made the most distant landing ever on another world and the only landing on a body in the outer solar system.
