Dr. Randall Hughes is conducting an experiment into how well black mangrove propagules from both local and south Florida trees grow in Saint Joseph Bay. Following a harsh winter, she is able to more thoroughly test the survivorship of black mangroves in northern Gulf marshes. Part of the series In "The Grass, On The Reef."

With support from the National Science Foundation, aerospace engineer Michael Philen and his team at Virginia Tech are investigating the biomechanics of fish locomotion, in hopes of contributing to the next generation of robotic fish and underwater submersibles. They’re studying how fish use their muscles to swim efficiently and execute underwater maneuvers, such as darting around in perfectly synchronized schools. They’re also developing new smart materials, such as a bioengineered hair that is modeled after the hair cell sensors on the side of fish that allow it to detect minute changes in water flow. After a few relatively mild winters on the northern Gulf coast, cold intolerant black mangroves have started to multiply in salt marshes. Dr. Hughes is conducting an experiment to test whether some mangroves are better adapted to colder climates. Part of the series "In The Grass, On The Reef."
A Category 5 hurricane is a monster of a storm that most people would want to avoid. But, Civil Engineer Arindam Chowdhury actually recreates those monster hurricane force winds in hopes of helping people better prepare for the real thing. With support from the National Science Foundation, Chowdhury and his team at Florida International University and the International Hurricane Research Center designed a 15 foot tall Wall of Wind (WOW). The goal is to see if low rise structures and building materials can withstand the same wind forces they would face in a full-blown hurricane. With support from the National Science Foundation, Center Director Doug Keszler and his team in the College of Science at Oregon State University are developing the next generation of electronic circuits, starting with the basic computer chip. In the manufacturing process, they want to replace bulky carbon compounds with metal oxides, in order to put more transistors onto a chip. The new process would be cleaner, faster and cheaper. At Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Christopher Williams heads the effort to further advance 3-D printing with copper, a widely used conductor in electronics. Williams is using a process called binder jetting in which an inkjet printer selectively jets glue into a bed of copper powder, layer-by-layer. The printed copper product is then taken to a furnace to fuse the particles together. With support from the National Science Foundation, Williams is addressing a major challenge in the 3-D copper printing process, which is to eliminate the porosity that develops in the part during the process. Under them, a rainbow of colors is dancing in the waves. Moko and Mei-Lei think that the fish must be organizing a party and decide to dive in. Bit by bit the sun is rising and day is breaking. The two friends return to the village, overjoyed at the wonders of the ocean.
