In 1898, two African lions began attacking railway workers in Tsavo, Kenya. First reports estimated that 135 people fell victim to these "man-eaters," but further research published in 2009 lessened that number to 35 individuals. Over the years, different theories as to what motivated these attacks have varied, and recently host Emily Graslie got to talk with two experts who are working towards finding an answer. Gorongosa National Park was once famous for its lion population. However, during Mozambique’s struggle for independence and subsequent civil war, the park’s iconic wildlife was slaughtered. In 2008, a massive ecosystem restoration project began. Today, many animals are bouncing back in large numbers, but it is unclear if the lions are also making a strong recovery. Paola Bouley heads the “Gorongosa Lion Project,” an effort to document the lions’ response to the park’s restoration and identify any factors that may be limiting their recovery.

Algae play a vital role in the marine ecosystem. They provide food for all sorts of species, but in rare instances, they can also do harm. Harmful algal blooms occur when colonies of certain types of algae grow out of control and produce toxins that enter the food chain through fish and shellfish. Eventually, the toxins can kill larger marine animals like sea lions, manatees, turtles, and dolphins. It also makes shellfish unsafe for human consumption.
