    There’s a new renewable energy player in town, and it’s about to make waves in the industry. Despite its massive potential as a source for renewable energy, the ocean is unlikely to contribute meaningfully to electricity supplies without dramatic, innovation-driven reductions in the cost of energy conversion. That’s where engineers Balky Nair, Rahul Shendure, and Tim Mundon come in with their company, Oscilla Power. With support from the National Science Foundation, they’re developing a utility-scale wave energy harvester called the Triton. This technology shows promise as a means for delivering utility-scale electric power to the grid at a price that is competitive with conventional fossil or renewable technologies. Looking out to the horizon, he notices a shot of color at the water's surface. He wakes Mei-Lei to ask her what he is seeing. Together they take a barge and set off. Under them, a rainbow of colors is dancing in the waves. Moko and Mei-Lei think that the fish must be organizing a party and decide to dive in. Bit by bit the sun is rising and day is breaking. The two friends return to the village, overjoyed at the wonders of the ocean.

This desert is now home to the largest ground-based radio telescope in the world called the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array or “ALMA for short.     With support from the National Science Foundation's Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences, psychologist Brad Duchaine and his team are studying the brains of 20 people with "face blindness." The team hopes to better understand the computational and neural basis of face processing in general. The research will help scientists develop a classification system for the condition and advance understanding of how different face-processing abilities are organized in the brain.     The arctic ground squirrel has developed highly specialized adaptations to extreme environments. This species maintains circadian rhythms throughout the arctic summer, despite the almost ceaseless daylight during this period. The squirrels’ body clocks have evolved to work just fine without the help of the day/night cycle. With support from the National Science Foundation, physiological ecologist Cory Williams of the University of Alaska, Anchorage, and a team of researchers traveled to the Toolik Field Station in northern Alaska to study the arctic ground squirrel on its home turf.     Kit Parker is a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve and has served multiple tours of duty in Afghanistan. Even when he’s not in uniform, this Harvard University bioengineer makes it his mission to protect the men and women of the U.S. armed forces. Parker and his team are developing next-generation nanofibers at the Harvard Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC). The unlikely inspiration for Parker’s team is none other than the cotton candy machine. They use their own version of that technology to spin a wide range of polymers, both natural and synthetic, into new fabrics and materials for military use. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”

    The Magic School Bus is an award winning animated children’s television series based on the book series of the same title by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen. It is notable for its use of celebrity talent and being both highly entertaining and educational. After the illuminating light show at Walkerville's old theatre, Arnold's bossy cousin Janet claims she could put on a much better show. Nobody believes her until Janet and Arnold mysteriously disappear. Ms. Frizzle leads her class into the darkened theatre to look for them. To shed some light on the problem, the kids become beams of light.

    Visible light, which can be seen with human eyes, comprises a small sliver of the electromagnetic spectrum. The rest of the spectrum, from short wavelength gamma rays to long-wavelength radio waves, requires special instruments to detect. ALMA uses an array of radio telescopes to detect and study radio waves from space. ALMA is an advanced tool for studying very old stars and galaxies. These objects now are seen at great cosmic distances, with most of their light stretched out to millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths by the expansion of the universe. ALMA provides the unprecedented ability to study the processes of star and planet formation.
