    Disease, pollution, and loss of habitat are killing off hundreds of species of amphibians. One of the biggest threats right now is an aquatic fungus called chytrid that infects the skin of these historically tough, resilient creatures. With funding from the National Science Foundation, Biologist Vance Vredenburg studies the disease and shares his research with scientists who are dealing with this crisis on every continent where amphibians live.

    Earth's moon was probably formed when a body the size of Mars collided twice with the planet. The moon is steadily receding into space; eventually, due to the loss of this lunar regulator, Earth will start to wobble, creating climatic chaos. Eclipses can be also seen often when the sun obscures the moon or vice versa. Another light show, the Aurora, occurs when electrified particles from the solar wind interact with Earth's upper atmosphere and is visible particularly in the Polar Regions.

New scientific insights point to the impact of the eruption of the Ilopango Volcano in Central America. The eruption was violent and propelled ash into the stratosphere. As a result, the sun struggled to break through the ash. The following 10 years were extraordinarily cold, and this was the beginning of a time period marked by famine, war, and an almost complete loss of cultural heritage.     James Woodenlegs first learned to communicate using Plains Indians Sign Language from his family, growing up on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Montana. Also known as “hand talk,” the language has been used by both deaf and hearing Indians from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico for at least 200 years, possibly much longer. Woodenlegs is working with sign language scholars Jeffrey Davis and Melanie McKay-Cody to document and preserve hand talk, one of thousands of the world’s endangered languages.

    Sight, touch, hearing, taste, and smell send sensory messages to the brain at a speed of 430km/hr. The brain deals with 11 million information signals per second, and this continual flow of information is sorted and analyzed by the brain, which directs the senses, organizes them, and improves them. The brain’s plasticity allows it to continually adapt. If and individual loses one sense, the brain reorganizes and compensates by increasing the power of the other senses.     The cochlear implant is widely considered to be the most successful neural prosthetic on the market. The implant, which helps individuals who are deaf perceive sound, translates auditory information into electrical signals that go directly to the brain, bypassing cells that don't serve this function as they should because they are damaged. Led by engineer Pamela Bhatti at the Georgia Institute of Technology, a team of researchers at both Georgia Tech and the Georgia Regents University created a new type of interface between the device and the brain that could dramatically improve the sound quality of the next generation of implants.

The human brain suffers irreversible damage if deprived of oxygen for even a few minutes-a fact Dr. Gunther von Hagens demonstrates by utilizing human cadavers as examples. Simulating an artery injury to illustrate oxygen depletion through blood loss, von Hagens then focuses on problems affecting the trachea, the top priority for ER doctors. In order to show the major structures of the airway and how they can be blocked by foreign objects, von Hagens inserts an endoscope into his own throat and saws a frozen body's throat in half, revealing the major structures of the airway and their potential weaknesses. Red Cross first-aid expert Emma Rand explains simple techniques for clearing the airway, while emergency medicine consultant Dr. John Heyworth shows how paramedics treat complex trachea damage.     We often hear about insects and other animals passing on diseases to humans, so-called zoonotic diseases, such as rabies, cholera, and West Nile virus. Now, for the first time, researchers are examining a disease that humans are spreading to an animal, specifically Elkhorn coral off the Florida Keys. With support from the National Science Foundation, Rollins College biologist Kathryn Sutherland is tracing this emerging infectious disease phenomenon, known as “reverse zoonosis.” Elkhorn coral was once the most common coral in the Caribbean, but it's now a threatened species due to population losses from White pox disease. Sutherland believes undertreated sewage, possibly from leaking septic tanks or illegal cruise ship discharge, could be the source of this disease.
