    The body is like a self-supporting hospital, able to deal with its own with wounds, bacterial invasions, fractures, and obstructions to its various passages. Follows the sequence of events over seconds and weeks when skin or bone is damaged, and shows the defensive reactions of blood clotting, fever, and mending of bone fractures.

    The evolution of the uses of corn coincides with some significant historical events. Throughout history, it has been a staple in the human diet, but in the 1950’s, it became the main ingredient in the meat industry. Farmers used corn to shrink the growth periods of cattle to meet the demand of the consumer. Corn syrup was born from the Cuban Embargo. Today, genetically engineered corn is seen in nonfood products.

    African penguins are critically endangered. Their colonies have been reduced by 70 percent in the last decade. Commercial fishing is a great factor in the penguins' population decline as the world's oceans are being overfished. With penguin chicks’ growth and health in crisis, a hands-on rescue strategy could sustain struggling colonies while conservationists work to ensure the species’ survival.

    Corals are important ecosystem engineers, providing habitat and nutrient recycling to tropical reefs. However, coral species’ richness and abundance are in decline worldwide, due in large part to the impacts from global industrialization and human population growth. Coral disease is a major contributor to this decline of tropical reefs, and therefore, investigations into the causes of and remedies to these diseases are of critical importance. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”

    A chart of exponential growth shows that some things change faster over time. Back in 1798, Thomas Malthus noticed that not everything grows this way. This caused people to worry, and they were sure it would lead to massive death, starvation, and famine. However, the Green Revolution kept this from happening, and scientists are currently working to produce enough food for the current exploding population. Part of the “It’s Okay to Be Smart” series.

    Home to 25% of all marine species, coral reefs protect the coastlines of more than 100 countries and provide 500 million people with jobs. However, reefs are experiencing damage due to climate change, ocean acidification, and other pressures. Mote Tropical Research Lab and the Coral Restoration Foundation, both in the Florida Keys, are performing groundbreaking work by accelerating coral growth in the lab, creating nurseries in the ocean, and replanting on damaged reefs. Their efforts create hope for the future of sustainable coral reefs around the globe.

    At first, the back room of plant physiologist Edgar Spalding's lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison might be mistaken for an alien space ship set straight out of a Hollywood movie. It's a room bathed in low-red light with camera lenses pointing at strange looking entities encased in Petri dishes. A closer inspection reveals the Petri dishes contain nothing alien at all, but rather very down-to-earth corn seedlings. They're grown in red light for optimal growth. They're just one of the plants featured in thousands of time-lapse movies Spalding has created over the past five years. The goal is to figure out how to grow crops optimally.

    Explores the need for many multicellular plants to have specialized internal transport systems, which are systems that can efficiently distribute materials from soil and leaves to the parts of the plants where they are needed. An overview of how plants obtain their nutrients is provided. The structure and function of root hairs is explored, explaining their remarkable ability to facilitate an enormous uptake of water and dissolved minerals for the plant. Following this, the separate transport systems of the xylem and phloem are explored in detail. Also explains the mechanisms by which vascular plants transport water and minerals upward from the roots as well as sugars from leaves and other sugar sources throughout the plant for storage or for growth and repair.

    The Mexican free-tailed bat is one of the most abundant mammals in North America. Outside of San Antonio, Texas there is a cave that is home to over 40 million of these bats. Roosting in large numbers in relatively few areas makes them especially vulnerable to human disturbance and habitat destruction. Documented declines at some roosts are cause for concern because there is a delicate balance in the ecosystem that depends on the bats. There is also cause for concern among other bat species that are falling victim to white nose syndrome, which is a condition named for a distinctive fungal growth around the muzzles and on the wings of affected animals.

Illustrating cellular aging and its relationship to AGEs, or advanced glycation end products, a connection is drawn between the bacteria an infant must consume to build a healthy immune system and the bacteria that consume the body at death. As Anna's life draws to a close, viewers will understand that "dust to dust" is a cycle in which humans take an active part--every time they sit down to a meal.
