With support from the National Science Foundation, computer scientists at the University of Illinois at Chicago are pushing science fiction closer to reality. They have created a wraparound virtual world in which a researcher wearing 3D glasses can take a walk through a human brain, fly over the surface of Mars, and more. In the system, known as CAVE2, an 8-foot-high screen encircles the viewer 320 degrees. A panorama of images springs from display panels, conveying a sense of being able to touch what's not really there. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”

Students learn the unique features of reptiles by viewing footage of snakes, lizards, and turtles in their natural habitats. Concepts and terminology include cold-blooded, scales, shell, and eggs.
Live-action weather footage helps students learn how they can observe the weather. Concepts and terminology discussed include: temperature, air pressure, weather systems, precipitation, and wind.
Crisp, vivid video footage illustrates how living things change throughout their lives. Focuses on the life cycles of plants, insects, and frogs.
Students examine the rock cycle. The major characteristics of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks are highlighted through vivid footage and colorful animations. Important terminology includes rocks, granite, limestone, marble, shale, slate, molten rock, lava, magma, and sediments.
National Geographic grantee Laura Ruykys works in Australia to help the endangered black wallaby. There are fewer than hundred left in the wild, and they have started an unique accelerated breeding program hoping to increase the numbers in the wild. Segment of video from Wild Chronicles Series.
Visionary oceanographer Scott Glenn leads a team of scientists as they race against time to launch the first autonomous underwater robot across the vast and dangerous Atlantic Ocean. Destined for Spain, the 8-foot bright yellow robot named RU27, or "Scarlet," is launched off the coast of New Jersey. Throughout her journey, data collected by Scarlet is fed into oceanographic navigation and forecasting models. Engulfed by the powerful ocean, our robot hero faces extreme weather conditions, ship traffic, and aggressive sea life that can terminate her mission. If Scarlet can successfully cross the vast Atlantic Ocean, her historic mission will inspire a future robotic oceanographic observation network critical for monitoring and predicting climate change. If Scarlet can successfully cross the vast Atlantic Ocean, her historic mission will inspire a future robotic oceanographic observation network critical for monitoring and predicting climate change.
Live-action footage conveys basic features of the major invertebrate groups. Special attention is paid to the body structure and physical features of simple animals. Other terminology includes backbone, sponge, sea anemone, radial symmetry, planaria, earthworm, bilateral symmetry, exoskeleton, segmented body, and jointed appendages.

Crisp, colorful video footage illustrates the beautiful and fascinating features of the fall season. Also takes a brief look into what causes this season. Concepts and terminology: autumn, foliage, seed dispersal, migration, hibernation, and harvest.
Photographers and scientists try to explain their fascination with volcanoes and earthquakes. Focuses not on the geological causes, but on how and why these phenomena are photographed and studied. Uses actual footage and closeups for impact. James Earl Jones narrates.
Examines the similarities and differences between Mars and Earth. Comments on the size, color, atmosphere, and temperature of Mars. Includes footage from recent missions to Mars and speculates on possible manned space flights to the Red Planet.
