    Since the beginning of time, humans have used chemical reactions without understanding them. For example, ancient Greek artisans were able to smelt metal, dye fabrics, and make glass. The attempt to transform simple metal into gold and silver was known as alchemy (the forerunner of chemistry as we know it today). By mixing elements, alchemists created chemical reactions which produced new compounds.     Using light as a probe, scientists found innovative ways to make inferences about the inner structure of the atom. In this unit, scientists discuss the change from believing the atom was a single indivisible particle to later understanding the atom is composed of subatomic parts. This new picture of matter lead to the development of the quantum model of the atom, as well as ways to identify traces of chemical elements, whether on earth, in the sun, or in a distant galaxy.     An early exploration (2015) into how to make a sim accessible has taken place for Forces and Motion Basics. It has working keyboard navigation and auditory descriptions for the 'Net Force' screen when the screen reader is in 'Forms' mode. We are working on updating the content so that it can be read by the screen reader in any mode. Notes for the main interaction: Press 'Enter' or 'Spacebar' to enter a group of pullers. Once in the group, use 'Arrow' keys to choose which puller you wish to select. Press 'Enter' or 'Spacebar' to select puller and move to knot selection. Use 'Arrow' keys to choose between different knots. Press 'Escape' to leave a group of pullers or knots, 'Tab' to leave group and go to next element. This prototype has been tested with NVDA and Firefox.

    Some things die and decay and others don't. A walk in the park teaches that leaves, logs, and animals are examples of things that decay or rot.     Teaches caveman Zog that people use energy in one of two main ways: by moving heat from one place to another (conduction, convection, or radiation) or by transferring energy from one form to another by using an appliance, like a lamp or car. Appliances always waste some energy, and Zog learns why energy efficient appliances are the best choices people have today. As only a caveman can, Zog provides plenty of laughs along the way to finding clever and complete answers to elementary energy questions.
