    The Lemhi Valley is a sagebrush steppe in Eastern Idaho, along the border with Montana. It is a critical habitat for the pygmy rabbit, and University of Idaho mammalian ecologist Janet Rachlow is gathering data to create maps showing where and when the rabbits spend their time. What they learn about the links between habitat features and habitat use could help inform future decisions involving land management and restoration for these types of environments.     Hummingbirds live only in the Americas, and their diversity numbers 350 species. They are part-time carnivores that must catch animals that compromise ¼ of their diet. Demonstrates how they can hover, fly backward, and move their wings in figure eights at 200 wind-beats per second in slow and stop motion images. Also reveals that every night their bodies go in torpor (mini-hibernation) so they don't starve while they can't consume nectar. Also sees how they co-evolve with flowers through pollinating mutualisms, and acquired their aerial skills by evolving from ancestors of swifts, their nearest relatives.

    Human babies drink milk; it's the food especially provided for them by their mothers. Various cultures have also added the milk of other mammals to their diet, and adults think nothing of downing a glass of cows' milk. But worldwide, only a third of adults can actually digest lactose, the sugar in milk. Human geneticist Spencer Wells tracks down the genetic changes associated with the ability to digest lactose as adults. Combining genetics, chemistry, and anthropology, this story provides a compelling example of the co-evolution of human genes and human culture.

    Students receive a crash course in the physiology and functioning of their hearts as well as how to keep their hearts healthy. Animations clarify how the heart works to provide oxygen and nutrients to all the tissues and organs of the body. They also detail what can go wrong. The program stresses that even teenagers can show early signs of atherosclerosis and other heart problems. Two cardiologists and a dietitian then pinpoint the main risk factors for an unhealthy heart, including: smoking, abnormal levels of cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and physical inactivity.
